For rich and evil folks like them, cancer treatment is also another revenue stream.Probably bought themselves big stakes in asbestos concerns for ludicrously low prices since everyone else would be avoided it like the plague, which will skyrocket in price if asbestos is made legal again.
Alternatively, is this how they think they will build that alternative rare earths supply chain outside China by getting Americans used to terrible scientifically proven cancer causing pollution at home.

I'm surprised China has no assets close to the Indian ocean?
I'm searching in the news and nobody has ever reported this ship having anything to do with China. Of all the articles, they say it's Panamanian flagged, carrying Venezuelan oil and China would not come up in the search window. I don't think this is a situation where they could call a Chinese combat group nearby for help.I'm surprised China has no assets close to the Indian ocean?
I think eventually China will need to take a stand or else their shipping is at risk.
And US military reach is far more than China's.

That said, America is going to be lashing out more and more as its overall power wanes further compared to China. Expect incidents like this to increase. America's economic and technological fight with China brings the US nothing but desperation and frustration. Militarily, near China is not going well either. The very last thing America can still do to look tough and declare victory is military power projection far from China and they really use these oppertunities to ham it up:
"Distance does not protect you," the Pentagon said in a statement, alongside video and photos which appear to show the US raid.
"The vessel tried to defy President Trump's quarantine - hoping to slip away," the Pentagon statement said.
"We tracked it from the Caribbean to the Indian Ocean, closed the distance, and shut it down.
"No other nation has the reach, endurance, or will to do this. International waters are not sanctuary. By land, air, or sea, we will find you and deliver justice."
Those are the words the US used to describe how a professional military pirated an unprotected, unescorted merchant ship trading between sovereign nations. Military projection supremacy will be the last thing to rot away in America's hold on the world. As Chinese economy and technology further ascends past the US to build a global-reaching military that is larger and more advanced than America's, that will be the last thing of theirs to go and only then will America finally have no choice but to mellow down as their reign of terror comes to a close.
Japan is making two mistakes here. It may not realize. first North Korea experience is not really relevant to Japan (that technology that enable Russia fighting is not exposed) and Japan showing public solidarity with Ukraine/Europe but not with Scientific state. certain things that were not present before but now they are present. If there is a conflict with North Korea than Russia will really humiliate Japan this time almost occupy it. When two civilizations science combined together they look at things of outsiders with contempt. Trump is asking for Japanese investments. but Putin want to bring science home without exposing its own students to foreign Academia.
Elena Druzhinina: Russia's goal is to achieve technological leadership based on its own developments
The question arises: why, despite development and state programs, are Russian universities' positions in some international scientific rankings declining? It's important to keep in mind that these rankings are largely dependent on political factors. This doesn't mean they should be ignored entirely—Russian scientists closely monitor these indicators. Nevertheless, the situation is reminiscent of the Olympic Games: Russia may not be topping the unofficial medal standings not because of a lack of strong athletes, but because many of them are not allowed to compete
