Speaking of which, @Temstar and @Blitzo had a brief exchange on the 054B FFGs based on quotes and comments by the Guancha Trio in a recent podcast.

Yes, the screenshots are from r/LCD, but I think the contents are rather worthwhile to be posted here.

In the meantime, given that there could be 4x new 054B FFGs to be built during the coming 15FYP (and potentially up to 8 units) - I think it's more suitable to say that the 054B-class still holds its worth quite well, even if/when the 054B FFGs are mainly serving as placeholders while the PLAN is waiting for the serial production of the next-generation FFGs to spin up. This is also with the purview of the 054A FFGs being very likely to have its production terminated at 50 hulls.

You should include a link to the source.

Who's PLArealtalk? I never viewed the 054B through that lens, but that second paragraph nailed it for me.

"The very long development cycle meant its technology, particularly lack of COGAG tracing back to lack of maturity in Chinese marine gas turbine back when it was first conceived"

Yet PLAN was fielding 052 series ships with gas turbine propulsion from the mid-2000s. Are you referring to the lack of a smaller marine gas turbine sized for frigate applications, or some kind of small+large GT configuration as employed in some Soviet and British designs? Even with only GT-25000 available, a similarly-sized successor to 054A could've employed a single gas turbine coupled with diesels if they'd been minded to, akin to German MEKO 200 using 1x LM2500 and 2xMTU diesels, while a larger vessel with higher speed target could've adopted two GTs coupled with diesels akin to 052D. Lack of scalability is a limitation for gas turbine propulsion but not that much of a limitation unless you are wedded to all-GT configuration -- in which case, why?
