Well, last time they took guns off fighters it didn't go too well. Just saying.

That's a specialty of USA, run before being able to walk, spaceshuttle, Zulmwatt, Railgun, laser weapon, "star war", EMALS, IEPS, to name a few. Don't blame the idea, blame the people who brought baby Tyson to fight an adult.

The pilot can shoot his pistol through the canopy, early WW1 style, if necessary.

I'd award more style points if pilots were to open the canopy and equip long jousting lances. Pilots from both sides take turns to try to knock each other out of their planes. Winner gets a billionaire heiress hand in marriage.
