After 40 years in US, pioneering mathematician Zhongwei Shen returns to China

Shen will continue decades of research on partial differential equations and harmonic analysis at Westlake University in Hangzhou

Pioneering Chinese-American mathematician Zhongwei Shen has left the United States to take up a chair professorship at Westlake University in Hangzhou.

He joined Westlake’s School of Science in July to continue decades of research on partial differential equations and harmonic analysis – mathematical fields that form the backbone of modelling the natural world, according to the university website.

Shen, who was admitted to

China starts planning to build 10-Gb fiber optical network.
I'm pretty sure this is part of the earlier 50G-GPON rollout from earlier this year:

Side note, there's been chatter of China planning a 50G-PON (50Gbps Passive Optical Network) sometime this decade. This is not just backbone infrastructure, but to individual households directly. For policy wonks and engineers, there's been a lot of anticipation that'll actually get built, if only to see what the effects are.

For anyone think "but why", 20 years ago South Korea rolling out nation-wide fiber, and the effects were profound. Rural areas with fiber had substantially higher PPP, and while urban area has upwards of 10% higher relative GDP growth. That was with just 100Mbps. Meanwhile China has orders of magnitude more people and physical space, and the altitude for growth is still high. Be people will easily "grow into" 50G just like the Koreans did with 1G.

Another very important breakthrough in Rare Earth.

Northern Rare Earth has built a rare earth giant magnetostrictive material production demonstration line

he Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region recently achieved a major breakthrough in the field of high-end functional materials: the first mass production demonstration line for rare earth giant magnetostrictive material (Terfenol-D) was officially completed at Northern New Materials. This marks the region's successful leap from "laboratory preparation" to "industrial application."

They are commonly used in high-end applications such as high-precision actuators, sonar systems, and electroacoustic transducers. For example, Terfenol-D ( a terbium -dysprosium-iron alloy ) is a representative material with high energy conversion efficiency and fast response. It is widely used in aerospace, marine exploration, and industrial automation, effectively improving equipment performance and reliability.

By the end of 2026, the demonstration line is expected to achieve an annual production capacity of 1,000 kilograms, laying a solid foundation for the industrial application of giant magnetostrictive materials.
