It will presumably stall South Korea's industrial expansion and accelerate Europe's industrial decline. A trade war assuredly would have done the same, but at least the U.S. would also have taken a hit, whereas under the current scheme it stands to benefit.

However, it's more politically palatable to the domestic constituents of vassal states American allies to pay protection money contribute to America's provisioning of global public goods by purchasing overpriced market priced American commodities than by cutting checks to the US government.

The conspiracy I have seen them spinning is that Trump is doing all of this intentionally because
a) india did 'something' on may10th that hurt american interests
b) All this pakistan favouring is to push india's button but they will come back to India because they need them for indo pacific,
c) India is the next rising super power and US is containing us, Indian navy can block america from going through the Malacca Strait (yes big indian RW journos are discussing this)
