Hell even just simple anti drone netting they've been using to protect logistics would've been better than nothing. Cheap and quick too!

They knew some of these were vulnerable because they had already put tyres on the wings!

If you look at the videos of the attack with the drones flying over the bombers being attacked, two Tu-95s had their tires on. Here's an example:

Yes but that anti drone netting or a simple deployable shelter could cost so much, especially if bought from Alibaba (not made in Russia!!)

At least they saved a few bucks, and it only cost them a few billion in damages and extremely difficult to replace strategic level aircraft.

Totally worth it

I am tired of repeating the same things about Russian incompetence.

The thing is that.. What if Russians really decided to throw the bomb ? The cost of being hummiliated is tbh smaller than having a nuclear war.

Probably Ukrainians objective is to :
-Sabotage the Russians but they know they cant destroy the whole triad in one go, but enough damage can be done to raise morale.
-To draw NATO intervention in case Russians decided to drop bomb
-To intistigate conflict between Putin and Hawkish members in the govt.

The Ukraine wont come unscathed or even properly exist once the small sun ignites. There can even be case where they might have succeeded in making a civil war in Russia.. but whoever win.. is not necessarily friendly to them. Or they decided to nuke Ukraine first then have the civil war going.

Well and the shelter have to be open at some point.. and well.. the FPV can get in thorugh that. Also nothing prevent those small drones to have something akin to Mini Broach warhead with shaped charge at front and small grenade thingy as follower. Inside the hangar you can always expect flammable materials.

and those tires is tbh for maintenance purpose.. keeping CG at where they want. The bomber was under maintenance. Like i think it's been pointed out when the bomber with tires appear the engines are missing, same can be seen for the Su-34.

They know Putin is a moderate and will not do anything. The retaliation could be just another symbolic attack to maintain the appearance of damage control and the pace of the war.

I am tired of repeating the same things about Russian incompetence.

This attack has clearly and massively crossed the biggest red line there is a for nuclear armed state that I am not sure Putin can just gloss over it even if he wanted to.

A systematic attack against your nuclear forces cannot go unanswered or it will invite more such attacks until your entire nuclear capabilities becomes compromised.

People love to have a dig at Russian incompetence, but it’s hard to see anyone else being able to deal with suck an attack much better.

The idiotic thing is that if Ukraine did this against other conventional bases directly involved in the war in Ukraine, the results would have been significantly impactful on the war by dealing a real solid blow against Russian Tac Air. And Putin would be able to do little more than to seethe and rage.

But this blatant and massive attack against Russian nuclear forces genuinely gives him legit cause to use nukes against Ukraine to establish deterrence against anyone else thinking of making similar terrorist style attacks.

And playing devils advocate here, what would NATO actually do if he did drop nukes on Ukraine? Charge into the nuclear war themselves? Of course not. They couldn’t really even use that to put undue pressure on China to sanction Russia as the obvious response would be, FAFO, what did you expect to happen to go after Russian nuclear forces like that in the first place?

Vasyl Maliuk, head of the SBU, the Security Service of Ukraine, has published the following photo showing him surveying five Russian air bases, the very ones that were hit in this morning’s strike.

Maliuk oversaw Operation Web, a major Ukrainian intelligence operation that involved the smuggling of smuggled goods into Russia and the simultaneous launch of hundreds of drones against major Russian air bases, resulting in dozens of aircraft being destroyed, mostly long-range bombers.

Probably the costliest single engagement in the war so far. I doubt that FPV drones have the range to reach that far. Did operative inside Russia release those?

There are plenty of ways to mitigate these issues. One is to make an exclusion zone around airbases. FPV drones have short ranges.
Maybe should have bought more Chinese lasers point defense? Patrolling the base 24/7 I guess with one system per base wouldn't be very expensive. It could have shot at least some of the drones.

Ukrainian sabotage operation takes out a Russian train in the Byransk region. This can affect logistics in the region. Ukrainian DRG unit took out a railway bridge.

Ukrainians lost 18 settlements in 7 days. No wonder Drapaty resigned.

Point blank laser defense on all high value target... non available ? How in the world they didn't at least netted their aircrafts parking slot... with these FPV drones nothing in the open anywhere is secure. You just need to get a ride in a civilian truck and release hell for 20 minutes and go. It's again Russian nonchalance in the work.

It's all you can eat buffet.
