Wow-thanks for posting news tidbit I saw this morning on TV as this indicates that China indeed has gone to the offense by basically calling Trump a liar who has been lying since the beginning-wait 1-3 months and the shortages and price hikes will really bite and everything from interest rate hikes and layoffs will really begin.
The Republicans' whole strategy is to end the war in Europe, get the Europeans to pay for security, normalize relations with Russia, try to "reverse Nixon" them if possible, and pivot completely to China.
You have to understand their mind set - the conflict with Russia is a "family conflict," but the conflict with China is an existential, racial conflict. The white man's supremacy must come before anything else - to be under another race's feet is intolerable.
Almost no other civilization on earth thinks like this. Yet it has been the philosophical model of Europeans for many centuries.

I wouldn't say ignore. Rather the aim is to just so enough but not overextend. Especially in places that are covered in crap, you don't want to get sucked in.
If you think China gets over extended by...India in a proxy fight, then I believe we're in a completely different framework of rationality, so we can agree to disagree.
I dont think China is as dumb as Trump as far as alliances go.

I'm pretty sure this is Trump sending out feelers for how to de-escalate with China without angering the rednecks. He has an idea, gets someone that is semi-official to announce it. See what happens, then decides to own or disown it the next day. In this case, if he announced he was dropping China tariffs to 50-65% and China called him to negotiate, he'd go with it. Instead, China not only didn't soften but went and told everyone that they never spoke to the US and has no plans unless Trump unilaterally and completely gives in, and media all around the world say Trump caved, so he just denies he ever said that.
Second batch incoming. I'd like to see what that shit looks like. Are they gonna open the package, examine the contents, price them, then send me a tariff bill? Still betting they don't have the man power or the competence.
I wonder at what point does the US get called out by some country publically at the UN or something.
