Me four years ago — “I sure hope Trump doesn’t confiscate my money/assets and deport me to China with nothing because I’m ethnic Chinese…”

Me right now — “If Daddy Trump absolutely has to please just take my money and assets and let me go back to the PRC.”

The White House said China is now facing up to a 245 percent tariff on imports to the U.S. "as a result of its retaliatory actions," another escalation in a trade war between the world's two largest economies.

The top potential tariff is higher than the previously stated 145 percent and was referenced in a fact sheet published by the White House late on Tuesday.

It accompanied an executive order signed by President Donald Trump that launched an investigation into the "national security risks posed by U.S. reliance on imported processed critical minerals and their derivative products."

Newsweek has contacted the White House press office by email outside of normal business hours for comment.

It appears Tesla is now doubling down on India for its batteries.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but India has basically zero supply chain in batteries. I don't see how they will build one up without the participation of China? Is Xi going to let CATL and the other big companies just transfer tech like this? My impression is that the mood in Beijing has soured after American trade war (and India is still often seen as an appendage to the West).

I doubt Tasla will spend the money to build the supply chain, at least not in the short term. For the rest of the world, China and Germany would have the capacity to handle, plus with the downturn in sales thanks to the AOE damage from Trump, meeting demand wouldn’t be an issue at all.

That just leaves the raw material and refining that need to happen to supply the US gigafactory, since they can’t get the material from China anymore, India would be the next best option, get the refined material at the cheapest rate possible and leave the slag to the Indians to deal with.

Most importantly, I doubt Tasla has that much spare capital to invest into a completely new supply chain and it wouldn’t make any business sense to invest such an amount at such a volatile time other than to solve the most immediate of problems.

I think that amongst the top dogs in DC now, it's totally clear that America has become the underdog and they only way to possibly confront China would be with 70+ allies. The only people who still honestly think that America can solo China with an advantage are poorly-educated angry rednecks who think that selling to the US is 80% of China's GDP.

"While at times the Trump team has shrugged off its need for deals with foreign nations, Bessent has shown his hand in why he wants deals: so that he can create a united front against China.

This 'grand encirclement' strategy would see the U.S. strike deals with Japan, South Korea, Vietnam, and India in order to apply pressure on China—the only nation that has responded with equally aggressive reciprocal tariffs.

'[Japan, South Korea, Vietnam, and India have] been good military allies, not perfect economic allies,' Bessent said last week per Bloomberg. 'Then we can approach China as a group.'"
From a purely tactical perspective, it should be obvious the more desperate you look, the less likely the other side will give you a deal, even people haggling with street vendors knows this.

It's pretty pathetic the US economy can't even handle the impact from pretending to not be desperate.
