The small farmer who worked his land with his family could not compete with the large landowners with slaves

The small farmer ended up in debt and working for the big landowner in conditions similar to slaves

Wars caused enrichment to the landowners who could buy more land from the State and impoverishment to the citizen-soldiers.

Tiberius Gracchus proposed limiting the size of the lands of the large landowners, and buying the lands that exceeded that size to rent them at a low price to the citizens, and expanding citizenship, increasing at the same time the foundations of the army and the nation improving peace and social cohesion.

It is not necessary or would not be necessary to be a Tiberius Gracchus or a Lee Kuan Yew to understand it. And yet ...

If you need an army to fight, you need to give people a reason to fight and the threat of losing one's land and family is a strong reason.
Continuing being a slave and having nothing is not a strong reason.
