Taiwanese would be really stupid if they just gave away everything to the US. Yeah don't forget the US would less likely come to Taiwan's aid if they could make those precious chips at home and not need Taiwan.

They don't have a choice. The US controls their production equipment, design and software.

China is the only country in the world other than US to have 1. A complete semiconductor industry 2. A competitive semiconductor industry.

Taiwan and SK are competitive but not complete. Their inputs and standards are controlled by the US.

Warsaw Pact was complete but not competitive. DDR and USSR had full semiconductor industries with tools, but were 10-15 years behind even in the 1980s.

IDK. but like I said before, looks like is a pretty dangerous downward spiral. This paranoid obsession with China that started with Obama "Pivot to Asia", has made the US to ignore domestic issues that with couple with the "China Threat" lead to Trump. That also couple with the stupidity of US think tanks has lead the US politicians and stooges to do serious costly miscalculations about not only China but also many others domestic and foreign issues and foreign world powers around the world. The US has seriously overestimated their capabilities, not only militarily but in many other areas, for example the Chip's Act only come decades after almost every government in Asia pushed to develop their own semiconductor industry and in on top of that US politicians put escalating export controls in a big buyer of their own semiconductor products that now is basically replacing everything US with non US solutions. All of that bad policies based on the magical thinking strategy of US politicians and Think Tankers.​

If course is not changed in a pretty bad scenario this could lead to full blown political fascism and the Latin-Americanization of the US economy where permanent high inflation and low economic grow becomes the norm.

The issues with USSR was not just being behind, was the lack of commercialization of their semiconductor industry and their obsession, pretty much like the US, with national security, that means that best quality semiconductor production was reserved for the military who is an horrible consumer of electronics, that is what I think lead to the stagnation of their semiconductor industry. Is the commercial sector who push the semiconductor industry for better prices, more competition and optimizations.

The best Soviet semiconductor production was relegated to maintaining old weapons systems. Imagine that.

I think most Americans are already internally aware to different extent their chances in any kind of war with China is bad, it's the whole reason China lives in their head rent free and why China collapse videos are so popular.

So when China directly said "bring it on b*" to their face, it basically confirms their fears and hits that inner voice of theirs especially hard.
