Tesla's sales in Germany fell by 76% YoY in feb. Meanwhile overall EV sales increased 30%.

In China, Tesla is also struggling but I suspect the reason isn't ideological as in Europe but rather simply a loss of competitiveness. Does Musk even care about any of this? It's not obvious to me that he does. He seems to care more about politics these days.

"[...]According to the (SK) trade ministry, Washington and Seoul have eliminated tariffs on most goods, under the Korea-U.S. Free Trade Agreement that took effect in 2012,
making its average tariff rate on imports from the U.S. stand at point-seven-nine percent in 2024.
This rate is set to drop further this year in accordance with an annual tariff reduction plan stipulated in the agreement.

For reference, the ministry added that the tariff rate on imported manufactured goods from the U.S. is zero-percent.
In terms of what Trump said,
the ministry assumed he would have been referring to Korea's most favored nation treatment tariff which stood at 13-point-4-percent in 2024, that is four times that of the U.S.'s 3-point-3-percent.
But this rate, applies to WTO member countries without bilateral agreements, and thus is not applied to goods imported from the U.S.

Amid such a potential tug of war on tariff schemes, Trump said he aims to "resurrect" America's shipbuilding industry, planning to offer special tax incentives to bring the industry back to the U.S., while also putting pressure on South Korea to participate in a natural gas pipeline project in Alaska.

"My administration is also working on a gigantic natural gas pipeline in Alaska, among the largest in the world, where Japan, South Korea and other nations want to be our partner, with investments of trillions of dollars each."

One expert says, however, that taking part in such projects would not be able to fully prevent Trump's reciprocal tariff scheme,
and neither would the FTA be able to do it.

"Trump threatened to impose a 25% tariff on Colombia and actually did on Canada and Mexico. All three countries have FTAs with the U.S., so having an FTA does not necessarily mean Korea can avoid such a measure." "
....

"(South) Korea is poised to set up an advanced strategic industry fund of 50 trillion Korean won or some 34 billion U.S. dollars over the next five years.
The fund will seek to support key future industries such as batteries and chips.
Intentions to this end were shared during a related meeting earlier on this Wednesday presided over by acting President Choi Sang-mok who also underscored the importance of securing a head start amid a rapidly changing environment with proactive and bold industrial investments.
Now the aforementioned fund is expected to reach some 68 billion U.S. dollars with the support of commercial banks."

Trump read out Zelenskyy's reconciliatory tweet to Congress and called it a letter, Ukraine's ambassador to US says

Oksana Markarova, Ukraine's Ambassador to the United States, has commented on a statement by US President Donald Trump during his speech to Congress indicating that he had received a letter from President Volodymyr Zelenskyy regarding Ukraine's readiness for negotiations.

Quote from Markarova: "In a rather challenging situation, we're still moving forward, building relationships and promoting our priorities. In his address to the nation, President Donald Trump read out a letter from our president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and said, 'I appreciate that he sent this letter'."

Details: Zelenskyy's spokesman, Serhii Nykyforov, told LIGA.net that the Ukrainian president had not sent a "letter" and that Trump was referring to his post on X (Twitter).

CIA director says US has paused intelligence support to Ukraine

CIA Director John Ratcliffe said Wednesday that the US has paused intelligence support and weapons shipments to Ukraine following the

between President Volodymyr Zelensky and US President Donald Trump last Friday.

“Trump had a real question about whether President Zelensky was committed to the peace process, and he said let’s pause,” Ratcliffe told Fox Business’ Maria Bartiromo in an interview on Wednesday.
“I want to give a chance to think about that and you saw the response that President Zelensky put out,” Ratcliffe added, “So I think on the military front and the intelligence front, the pause that allowed that to happen, I think will go away.”

Ratcliffe expressed hope that the pause will soon be lifted and emphasized his commitment to working with Ukraine towards achieving peace, following a letter from the Ukrainian president to Trump.
A senior US military official said the US has already curtailed some intelligence sharing, including carrying out fewer intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance flights that could impact both offensive and defensive operations including air defense, since Ukraine depends on US intelligence for overwatch.

In the lead up to Trump’s inauguration, Ratcliffe and the Trump transition team were told of the value of intelligence sharing with Ukraine by US officials who stressed that it was a hallmark of their achievements on the battlefield, according to a source familiar with the discussions.

CNN reported Tuesday that both Ukrainian and US military officials were evaluating the potential impact of suspending military aid.

Ukrainians are crazy, their country is about to be f**ked and they still try to shame Trump.

Taiwanese would be really stupid if they just gave away everything to the US. Yeah don't forget the US would less likely come to Taiwan's aid if they could make those precious chips at home and not need Taiwan.
To be fair, it is not entirely "give away" from Taiwan to US, in this case. I have a long history of dealing with Texas Instruments (TI) and Motorola Semiconductor. Almost all of those famous semiconductor hotshots out of Taiwan either learned or got their career in Fairchild, TI, Motorola, AMD or Intel (both of which were founded by Fairchild alumni). Particularly for TI and Motorola, they once had dedicated teams of building wafer fab that Intel or AMD never had. Morris Chiang was a VP of engineering at TI. Richard Chiang was a VP of engineering at TI. Similar situation also applies to the Korean semiconductor sector.

Suffice it to say, semiconductor is as American as Coca-Cola. It was foolishness of USA that allowed those colonies taking over their semiconductor fabrication industry. For all Taiwanese boasting or bragging about TSMC, in essence, it was an American company disguised in its on-paper domicile.

What is important in the current semiconductor drama is that, for the first time since semiconductor was invented in US, there is another country that is building up an entire indigenous semiconductor eco-system. If the first act of US foolishness in letting Taiwan and Korea taking over its semi fab industry was laissez-faire capitalism, this second act of US foolishness in forcing China into semi fab self-reliance is entirely political madness in DC.
