Trump tried to force sale too, it got blocked in courts. Nice thing is, it will drag beyond election season, and then people will forget about afterwards. The Kabuki theatre value has been milked, and American public have a memory of a goldfish, so they move onto next shitshow. This is part of China punching bag seasons, starting with TikTok, Steel tariffs, Solar tariffs, EV bad, Russia trade bad, it's going to keep on coming.

There is a balance. The USSR wasn't too bad at production. The problem was that the USSR was terrible at resource allocation. Something like making radios when everyone wanted TVs.

The 80's economic reform in China realized this problem. A big steel mill with new German/Japanese equipment is going to supply more than 10 little provincial steel mills. Better to just cut those small mills loose rather than raise that steel output on paper because there just isn't that much demand.

Maybe better to say "useful production drives economies". Something like an Apple 2 used to cost $1500 in 1980's (equivalent to $5000 now). For that money you could get some wild gaming computer with all the lights for $5K or a regular one for $1K or less. Everyone can afford a computer now so there is a huge software economy.
