I know a couple of guys like Anthony Ho in real life. In my experience, the smartest people in Hong Kong and Taiwan tend to be pro-CPC because they can see that despite its imperfections, the CPC has drastically improved the quality of life in China. As much as I hate to denigrate other Chinese people, the dumber ones usually come with one-bit brains. They tend to see most nuanced, real-world situations as a battle between "good" and "evil" and are thus easily fooled by Westerners who claim that liberal democracy is the only effective form of government.
During 2019, I actually talked to some Hong Kong protestors. They assumed that I was on their side because I'm Taiwanese lol
It was like talking to toddlers. I could hardly believe that there were Chinese people THAT stupid. Perhaps not all of the protestors were that stupid, but based on what I've seen, a lot of them were.

Yes they are that stupid. HK literally starves to death without mainland China, literally. Most of both fresh water and food come from mainland. It’s that simple.
So if you have to be stupid to be in that anti-CPC camp, then naturally the smarter ones are on the other side.
To go further, how stupid do you have to be to believe in American support (Regular rioters, not talking guys like Jimmy Lai or Nathan Law who are USA employees). If you actually want to create a more western style of governance for the territory, then you should be enlisting the support of the central government who actually has the power to make it happen.
