A majority of the people on Taiwan wouldn't mind independence just like how I wouldn't mind suddenly, out of nowhere, getting a 10k $ paycheck stuffed into my hands.
But just like I clearly know, that there's no way 10k paycheck would suddenly get given to me for nothing, likewise, the majority on Taiwan knows indepence doesn't just 'happen' or would 'happen easily' with no pushback or move from China.
Because of that, the majority is actually pretty fearful, and chooses to 'just' be undecided, or well, prefer current status quo.
It is what woman always talk about in relationships.
Where is the commitment?
The only commitment to Tai Du is in the same minority of radicals on the island, and in Washington DC. Japan too, but they don't matter.
This game has reached the point where the PRC will now actively try to cut off the oxygen to Tai Du, via economic means and further military posturing around the island (made possible from the Pelosi visit).
While at the same time, still holding out for better co-operation between the straits.
One lesson from the Cold War, the biggest mistake the American had made, was they assumed the communist world was monolithic. It was not.
Same case here.
Taiwan is not monolithic.
It is in a way, but still isn't.
The Taiwan identity could be monolithic to a point. The majority of Taiwanese are committed to a Taiwan identity.
However, that does not mean the population of Taiwan is committed to Tai Du.
That was the play of the separatist, that the commitment to Taiwan identity would lead naturally to the commitment for Taiwan independence. IMO, this was a long term play lasting decades.
Has this worked?
I would say no.
But there was no Plan B.
Therefore, expect nothing but reruns from the Taiwan island reality show for the next few years.
