Swaying the wide world, I have but one aim in view, namely, to maintain a perfect governance and to fulfil the duties of the State: strange and costly objects do not interest me. If I have commanded that the tribute offerings sent by you, O King, are to be accepted, this was solely in consideration for the spirit which prompted you to dispatch them from afar. Our dynasty's majestic virtue has penetrated unto every country under Heaven, and Kings of all nations have offered their costly tribute by land and sea. As your Ambassador can see for himself, we possess all things. I set no value on objects strange or ingenious, and have no use for your country's manufactures.
How the turn tables.

The Biden administration is poised to unveil a sweeping decision on China tariffs as soon as next week, one that’s expected to target key strategic sectors - Bloomberg
The US will impose new, elevated tariffs that focus on key industries including electric vehicles, batteries and solar cells. Other existing China levies are expected to largely be maintained. An announcement is scheduled for Tuesday, two of the people said.

While a decision could be delayed, it nonetheless represents one of Biden’s biggest moves in the economic race with China. It builds on his call last month to hike tariffs on Chinese steel and aluminum, and the formal launch of a fresh probe into China’s shipbuilding industry.

US Senator Chuck Grassley, an Iowa Republican, expects Beijing to respond again. “We know how China reacted when Trump put tariffs on,” he said. “They hit agriculture with it. I can’t be sure that China would hit agriculture the same as they did in the Trump ones, but they’re going to hit back.”

I enjoyed how basically they think the author has been Red China-pilled

It's interesting the Buick is a fleet car. This is exactly how GM started collapsing in America. Once the desirability dropped in the US, Pontiacs and Chevys became fleet queens and that's how they maintained volume. However, fleet cars have very low margins.

I think the author hit the nail on the head about protectionism. Whether it be EVs, semis, solar panels, the wave of western protectionism is merely going to delay the inevitable competition. Will these companies actually use this bought time to catch up or will they simply try to continue to legislate profits and create a USSR economy?
