Range is not the missile range itself but the fire control radar. 70km maximum range detection, with 40km slant range. Slant range is a term often used with radar sets.

I don't really know how effective the ESSM is at 50km though. The range where you have the highest PK tend to be well shorter than the maximum range.

Its a bit of topic by now but I need to add, that when the HQ-16/Buk missile quotes 40 to 50km range, its quoting its most effective range as in highest PK against a fighter sized target. It is not quoting its maximum flight range.

In this image the display of the VLS with the quad packing missiles is shifted to the side, and the HHQ-10 launcher display took its place.

The fact that the VLS display with the quad packers is on the spot with HHQ-10, YJ-18 and YJ-12 should tell you the VLS is a CASIC display, and the company is pretty legit.
