Probably because they were gelcoated that colour.
It is difficult to modify a radome with radar transparent material after it is manufactured.

One of my ideas is I believe the 055 could benefit from having an hangar capable of accommodating the Z-18. If the hangar can take 2 Z-20s, it should be able to accommodate the Z-18 with some modifications to its height. The Z-18F would make a higher endurance and higher range ASW platform. The Z-18 would make a great spec ops and CSAR platform with modifications. Similar to the Mi-8AMTSh... But the biggest difference would be the Z-18J. It would enable CEC to PLAN task groups without needing an aircraft carrier or aircraft from mainland PRC.A rare sight: a Z-18J/A has its retractable radar deployed.
