When Edward Snowden was interviewed by Brian Williams of NBC, Snowden mentioned he went through multiple channels to inform superiors of abuse. The NSA said they only found one instance of him contacting anyone. Surprise! Looks like they lied about that too.

The international affairs commentator of my favorite radio station remarks on his blog that the CIA distrusts Germany since 2002 when it was patently correct to oppose the US plans to attack Iraq. It thinks that Germany will now have to choose for the US or Russia and might well choose Russia.
He points to Der Spiegel polls that show that among the Germans there is as much sympathy for Russia as for US and that the large majority of Germans wants less dependence on America.

This will clearly influence German policy in the long run even as Merkel tries to maintain support for US. But US make it difficult for her.

Costa Concordia: Refloating operation begins

The wrecked Italian cruise ship Costa Concordia is being raised in one of the biggest maritime salvage operations in history.

Workers are slowly lifting the vessel by pumping air into tanks attached to the ship. The refloating operation is expected to take six or seven days.

The ship will then be towed to its home port, Genoa, where it will be scrapped.

The Concordia struck a reef off the Italian island of Giglio in January 2012 and capsized, killing 32 people.

The wreck was hauled upright in September but is still partially submerged, resting on six steel platforms.

"It's a very complex operation," Franco Gabrielli, the head of the civil protection agency overseeing the salvage, told reporters.

"The first phase of the operation will be the most dangerous because the vessel will be detached from the platforms."

He added that a search for the remains of Indian waiter Russel Rebello, whose body was not recovered from the wreck, would be carried out after the vessel was moved.

'Risks'

An engineer with Costa Crociere, the cruise operator, described the salvage efforts as "unprecedented".

"As with anything being done for the first time, there are risks. But we are confident," Franco Porcellacchia said.

Hundreds of divers and engineers have been involved in operations to salvage the Concordia, which is twice the size of the Titanic.

Local residents have said they are glad the wreckage will be removed.

"I am happy they are taking it away because to see a ship like that always there, with the deaths that happened, it gives us the shivers," Italo Arienti told Reuters news agency.

The captain, Francesco Schettino, is on trial for manslaughter and abandoning ship, charges he denies.

Tanks, other historical military vehicles to be auctioned off
More than 100 tanks and other machinery from what could be one of the largest and most significant collections of historical military vehicles will be auctioned off over the course of two days in San Mateo County..

The private collection, amassed by Silicon Valley manufacturing engineer Jacques M. Littlefield, is being offered for the first time to the public and features a 50-ton self-propelled gun and an 8-ton half track used in World War II, according to Auctions America, which is organizing the sale.

The vehicles were part of the Military Vehicle Technology Foundation housed at his Pony Tracks Ranch, which boasts many restored, rare and unique armored vehicles, accessories and artillery pieces representing weapons used during 20th century combat.

After his death, Littlefield's family donated the collection to the educational nonprofit Collings Foundation.

The portion being auctioned off will help raise funds for the facility and feature five of Littlefield's "rarest collectible vehicles in military vehicles in existence," according to the auction website.

Bidding was to start at 11 a.m. Friday at the Littlefield's foundation, 99 Old Spanish Trail in Portola Valley and continue through Saturday.

I have always wanted to own a panther tank. What about you guys?

Here is the actual auction catalogue. There is a Scud missile on sale.

I think it's more for collection sake for the historic nostalgic collectors, not meant for driving off road for the heck of it.
