Just because he was pictured with someone with organized crime connections doesn't mean there's an organized crime conspiracy. In the Chinese culture, associations are just as valuable as money. Taking pictures with people is a superficial way of showing off people that you know. It's the same thing over in China several years back where in the news it was reported any Westerner can be hired by some Chinese company and get paid thousands of dollars just standing around to play a Western executive to show off to other Chinese that they had connections to important Westerners thus attract business to that company. If you want to go by that then you can say the Japanese government is doing the bidding of the Yakuza because they're heavily involved with the Japanese government.

Associated Press had a story on it saying it exposed the "sinister underground of Chinatown." He's just a corrupt politician. It has nothing to do with Chinatown except some of the players were Chinese. If it were a part of the so-called Chinese underground, Leland Yee's chief of staff who was also arrested would have to be Chinese too. He wasn't.

So I'm not sure what you guys are questioning unless you're saying this was a full-blown organized criminal sinister conspiracy and not about corrupt individuals trying to make money anyway they can. You don't need to be in organized crime to do that. Besides the local media over here are already saying there are holes in the prosecutor's case. If that's the case then this could be just Leland's political enemies trying to get rid of him by using stereotypes to support it. He won't be running for office anymore even if the case falls apart. I'm sure since rising political star Gavin Newsome had a picture taken with Raymond "Shrimp Boy" Chow too, the Republicans will use it to smear Gavin Newsome as being a member of the Chinese TRIADS out to destroy America. Hmmm, is that what this is all about? He will definitely run for governor eventually and maybe higher office...

Well on a lighter note, let's conduct a very unscientific experiment.

I wonder just how much of a deal the western, and especially British media will make of this story.

It would be truly ironic and telling if weather obsessed Britian's media ends up devoting more coverage to China's air pollution problem than their own country's.

I read a story somewhere where pollution levels in Paris rival some of the levels in major cities in China. Obama already screwed with any serious tackling of the environment. Copenhagen was a big deal and failed. Recently there was another environmental summit that wasn't not made as a big deal and failed because Western countries again made the same unreasonable demands where they didn't have to sacrifice and it was instead up to everyone else. They didn't advertise that summit as important because they have already resigned to the notion the West will not give up anything. Notice all talk of green industries are history now?

I have been following this all night.

At first blush it looks like a mental health issue and we will just see what all the mitigating factors are.

IMHO, they should have armed personnel in each duty section. Make them the Sr. NCO on duty at the time, or two or three and rotate the armed watch within the group. They have to end the idea of the entire base, outside of the MPs, being a free fire zone for whomever goes rogue, for whatever reason.

Hasan is going to get death...and he richly deserves it. He was an abject traitor. This guy did off'ed himself when an MP confronted him.

Condolonsces and heart felt prayers for the dead, and their family, friends, and loved one.

Actually US CO2 per capita is pretty high for a country with about 1/4 or 1/5 of China's population.

Heartbreaking, and many in the Liberal world are clamoring for Felons to have their voting rights restored, its time to call a thug a thug, and evil violent men need to be apprehended and "locked up", before they harm innocents. While it might cheapen our brothers death, to suggest that the young lady was not up to the job, I would suggest that allowing criminals to assume positions of trust is asinine, lots of cops have been disarmed and shot with their own weapons, so we really don't know if that's a factor. I do however deplore the breakdown of discipline that has come as a result of political correctness, there are so many worthy soldiers, sailors, and airmen who are out of the military, because they where unwilling to compromise the standards of honor and duty, in order to "keep their job". Word is that Obama has told the brass to get next to his "gays in the military policy, or get out", after fighting for the country that they love, they certainly should have the "right" to speak theirs mind and voice their concern over liberal policies that endanger their lives and the honor of the military. That the "community organizer" is trying to shut them up, belies his own personal hypocrisy in my opinion......

God have mercy on this young man and his family, and God have mercy on America.... brat

I hope this young hero will receive some kind of award for his action, like a sliver star or even the Navy's Cross, post humus.

Stats like this is very misleading unless it's calculated per capita. Even then it remains misleading because even though something may be produced in a certain country it may have been produced at the order of a company based in another country for consumption by customers in yet another country.

I would also expect countries higher in latitude to produce more CO2 per capita.

Let's also not forget something like 30%-40% of China's pollution is a result of outsourcing by foreign corporations.
