At least 5,000 Rwandan troops have been deployed in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, a UN official has said, as part of a joint operation by Rwanda and its neighbour to eradicate Hutu rebels. The operation aims to root out Rwandan Hutu rebels from the Democratic Force for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR).
Security was bolstered in the Indian-controlled city of Srinagar in Kashmir ahead of Republic Day ceremonies scheduled for Jan. 26 celebrating India's independence in 1950.

Israeli border police fired tear gas during a Palestinian rally in the West Bank city of Hebron. Several hundred Hamas supporters held the rally to claim victory in the Gaza Strip war, throwing stones at Israeli officers.
