Jeff what I have knowledge of happening regarding the sinking of CV-66 was that the EOD set explosivies prior to the sinking of the ship.

No offence to the Iranian military, but I do not believe that they would be able to get that close to an American Aircraft Carrier without losing the majority if not all of their attacking vessels.
The French have operated fixed wing aircraft off of large (and now nuclear) carriers in the modern era more than anyone else outside of the United States Navy.
They know what they are about and are very squared away...and wherever possible have very good, indigenous systems employed (like the Rafael for example), and then use good old American technology where they must (like the cats and the E-2C Hawkeye).
