Soldiers from the Kenya Defense Forces arrive after dawn outside the Westgate Mall in Nairobi, Kenya Sunday, Sept. 22, 2013. Islamic extremist gunmen lobbed grenades and fired assault rifles inside Nairobi's top mall Saturday, killing dozens and wounding over a hundred in the attack.

Geez! how many different types of rifles do the Kenyan army use? Wouldn't it make sense to at least standardized their assault rifle of choice? they are not even the same caliber type weapon! Are they even special forces/specialized counter terrorism group or just regular army? from those pictures, their 'stance and posture' don't look a highly trained group of operators for urban assault compared to say SAS, GSG9, DEVGRU, GROM etc...

what you are seeing is a mixed bag. Regular grunts securing the out side local police and SF as for weapons
regular grunts fn FAL, HK g3 both 7.62x51 NATO
plus AKM 7.62x39mm
Like most African arms most of them have seen better days
SF M4A1 5.56x45mm and FN SCAR H 7.62x51mm both look like late models so three calibres

IMO the reason the have different caliber rifles is because they are a developing country and most of its weapons are donated therefore you get the many different weapons.

A fair assessment to a degree, it should be noted that the calibers seen in the event were among the worlds most popular types and with the possible exception of 5.56mm the most popular in the African region. Also seen around that exent were MP5 and browning high powers adding 9x19mm NATO to the mix. But one thing to keep in mind is you don't need to be a so called developing country to have a mix like that. The PLA uses QBZ95G for its front line QBZ 95 for some front and some second Type 88 for second line QBZ03 for some units, and still has some type 56 in the back of the armory add in the PAP with type 56 Type 95 and seen with CQ 556 weapons and we see such a jumble.
the US has M16A4 for some units M16A2 for more reserves M4 and M4A1 add in FN SCAR and HK416 for elites M14 variants for sniper weapons along side M110 and SR25s and you can see another jumble of weapons. Its partially budget partially operations needs.

the AK is a fair weapon in urbanized terrain as it was developed for it. The AR is better at range fighting, but the FAL,G3 and FN Scar H have undeniable stopping power and reach beyond them both.
