HMCS Fredericton is deployed on a six-month mission to the Arabian Sea, Gulf of Aden and Horn of Africa to conduct counter-piracy and counter terror operations alongside our NATO and Coalition partners. As part of Canada’s ongoing naval contribution to NATO, HMCS Fredericton will integrate into Standing NATO Maritime Group 1 (SNMG 1), currently conducting counter-piracy operations. While conducting operations against international terrorism, HMCS Fredericton will integrate with Combined Task Force 150 (CTF 150). HMCS Fredericton’s participation in Operation Saiph (Sa-eef, meaning ‘sword’ in Arabic) represents Canada’s ongoing contribution and commitment to international peace and security and confirms that Canada’s Navy remains relevant, responsive and effective in the new security environment.

The Canadian Helicopter Force from the Joint Task Force Afghanistan Air Wing includes eight CH-146 Griffons where their primary role is to escort transport helicopters and ground convoys, and to conduct light transport missions. The Joint Task Force Afghanistan Air Wing comprises all the Canadian Forces air assets in the southwest Asia theatre of operations. It stood up at Kandahar Airfield on 6 December 2008 with the 200 personnel deployed with the Tactical UAV Flight, the Tactical Aviation Unit and the Theatre Support Element, and grew to its established strength of 450 personnel with the purchase of CH-147 Chinook D helicopters from the U.S. Army, and the deployment from Canada of CU-170 Heron UAVs and CH-146 Griffon helicopters.

Joint Task Force Afghanistan (JTF-Afg) is Canada’s military contribution to Afghanistan. Canadian operations focus on working with Afghan authorities to improve security, governance, and economic development in the country. The Canadian Forces (CF) contribution in Afghanistan comprises over 2,750 soldiers, with the majority serving with JTF-Afg at Kandahar Airfield and Camp Nathan Smith, home of Canada’s Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT), in Kandahar City. Additional personnel are assigned to various military headquarters, support bases in South-West Asia, and work in close support to various civilian organizations in Afghanistan.

The United States must uphold moral standards when waging wars that are necessary and justified, Obama said on Thursday as he accepted the Nobel Prize for Peace. In a speech at the award ceremony in Oslo, Obama said violent conflict would not be eradicated "in our lifetimes", there would be times when nations would need to fight just wars and he would not stand idle in the face of threats to the American people.
