Maple Guardian 0802 was an exercise taking place from September to November of 2008 in order to train elements from Joint Task Force Afghanistan (Task Force 1-09 and 5-09) for their deployment to Afghanistan in the spring of 2009. Maple Guardian took place at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright, and brought together the Roto 7 Battle Group drawn principally from Land Force Quebec Area (LFQA) and a Headquarters Group from Land Force Western Area (LFWA)

The Task Force made up of Francophone soldiers from Valcartier is training with a Headquarters group from Edmonton. EX MAPLE GUARDIAN is an opportunity for these two different cultures to train together before departing for Roto 7. Training in Wainwright is a crucial step for the soldiers who will be deployed to Afghanistan.

PACIFIC OCEAN (Oct. 28, 2009) A Standard Missile-3 (SM-3) is launched from the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force destroyer JS Myoko (DDG 175) in a joint missile defense intercept test with the Missile Defense Agency in the Pacific Ocean. The SM-3 successfully intercepted a medium-range target that had been launched minutes earlier from the Pacific Missile Range Facility, Barking Sands, Kauai, Hawaii.
