I consider this game to be worth mentioning about.

Chromehounds for the XBox 360. I think its the best ever rendition and simulation for a robot-mecha game, and far better than any Battletech or Mechwarrior in terms of customization, graphics, design and conceptual realism as well as the feel of the game. Chromehounds is basically online, and played through a Mechassault style Conquest campaign, where players basically choose which faction they want to belong to and fight for that faction. You can of course, choose to change factions later. It has very strong support for team play and combined arms play, and mechs or half mech/tank machines called Hounds, can be set up as a close range fighter, sniper, scout and artillery support.

The scenario is very down to earth, in comparison to Mechwarrior. As a matter of fact, that scenario nearly came to life just recently, even though Chromehounds came out in 2006.

The scenario is focused on three countries south of Russia, where one side, Morskjoj is heavily backed by the Russians. So their mechs or Hounds as they call it, reflect Russian taste for brute power and strength. The second faction is Tarakia, which is backed by the US and NATO. The Hounds reflect technical advancement and balance. The third faction is Al Sakar, which is backed by resurgent Turkish power and supplied with weapons from the East. They emphasize speed and stealth. And the map of the campaign? Its straight out of the Caucasus.

Its not hard to see that the factions actually represent S. Ossetia and Abhzakhia, Georgia as Tarakia, and there is a pro-Turkish want to break away province that seems to represent Al Sakar. The name of that province seems to escape me at the moment and so is the spelling. The map is straight off from the same map with Georgia, although the names of towns and ports are changed. There is even a map where there is a port in the Black Sea with Russian like ships docked on it.

Chromehounds is based on an alternative history scenario where mechs instead of tanks prevailed as the dominant means of land warfare. There are tanks in the games, which end up as fodder, and the mechs can be configured with tracks like tanks. But game experience says you want to have legs instead.

The game is from FROM Software, makers of Armored Core, and published by SEGA.

Regarded as the most patriotic game ever, in all irony it wasn't developed in the US and wasn't sold in the US. That was FROM's Metal Wolf Chaos.

If you think Gundam meets George Dubya Bush, you get the picture.

In here, the evil Vice President, aptly named Hawk, managed to hatch a successful coup against the White House and took over the government. Somehow he managed to frame the President as a terrorist.

But the young President has an ace in his hand. Underneath the White House is a secret hanger and laboratory where the new super Mecha, called Metal Wolf, was developed. The President takes control of Metal Wolf, busts out of the White House, and fights to return Democracy and Freedom to the United States, while out to butt kick the Vice President's ass. In the meantime, Metal Wolf had to fight the US military (try to minimize the 'collateral damage'). The parts where buildings and skyscrapers in Las Vegas and New York get blown up was probably a bit too nasty for post 911 sensitivities however.

Something that Planeman might be interested to see the designs in, though not to play. The games are FROM's Armored Core 4 and the just released sequel Armored Core For Answer.

I won't say much about the games, but there are missions in the games that involve naval scenarios. Those missions often include futuristic designs of ships that are on the same wavelength as Planeman's such as the future carriers, destroyers and such. Some of the ships resemble Arsenal ships. Others represent a cross between the Zumwalt class and trimaran hulls. Too bad you have to blow them all.

I'll be the first to say it that I'm a Halo geek. Sure the Half life series is good too but as far as the Xbox, and Xbox360 goes I'm all about Halo3. I also really like the Call of Duty series and Brothers in Arms, and Unreal Tournement. For the playstation however, I've always really liked Killzone, and they have really good racing sims. I have to say that I am REALLY biased towards the Xbox. Don't ask me why because I really dunno, besides the fact that IMO the Xbox controllers are way more comfortable in my hands, and especially when it comes to the Halo series, all of the controller based actions are all so natural to me, it's almost like I can play Halo blindfolded, and I mean any Halo: 1,2 or 3. I never have to look at the controlls to know what I am doing, it's just so natural and fluid that I will chop anyone in half with the sword before they even knew I was there.....

Anyway, as far as PC games go I'm not really that much of a fan of PC games like WoW and the like. Pretty much the only PC game that I play on a regular basis is: Fly Aces High2. It's a really realistic WW2 flight sim. You can fly any WW2 fighter aircraft that you want, and not only that you can fly any bombers like the B-17 to the B-25/26, Me-110 to British Mosquitoes. You can even drive any Tank or APC or mobile AAA guns that are desirable. Basically anything you would want to fly or shoot is available, especially the fighters. Probably the most competitive/addictive PC game I've ever played.

P.S. I would recommend that you use a joystick...

Have you tried the IL-2 Sturmovik series? Its been morphed into sequels such as Pacific Aces and a new 1946 standalone scenario game. All the games in the series are all compatible to each other allowing every aircraft in the series to fight each other even though such matches historically never happened.

I have never seen a game so thoroughly researched as this one, and every new revelation discovered on WWII aircraft and their performance characteristics are included into every patch. I've never seen a game and developers so insistent on authenticity. The forums are well populated and quite active with aviation buffs talking and arguing about the very fine details of aircraft like the Spitfire. The game can be said to include everything including the kitchen sink if it can fly; they got every variant of the ME-109 for example. You can create combinations like La-5 vs. Japanese Raiden.

For modern air combat, I would suggest the Lock On Modern Air Combat series, simply referred to as LOMAC. It has been expanded from its original version to include Hokum helos. There are about more than thirty aircraft you can combat against, and about five you can fly, the Su-27/33, MiG-29A/C, F-15A/C, the A-10 and variants of the Su-25.

I especially like the detail that has gone into the Flanker. I recommend this game to people who like to have some introduction on modern air combat.
