It's news of the Weird as it seems like a why bother, yet it's news as part of the continuing tensions between Hong Kong's special status as the jewel of Pacific trade and economics as a free port of asia vs Hong Kong as a Subject of the People's Republic of China.
At it's most Basic Nintendo, did not bother to make a Cantonese version of the next series of Pokemon.

This is causing a back lash mostly because of the existing tensions in Hong Kong where there is a continuing fear of a Mainlandization including Mandarin-ization.
Some might remember a movie that caused some controversy lately called "10 Years". The movie is basically an expression of the Fear of loosing the unique culture of Hong Kong. Part of the Film's major hits was that as part of the plot the PRC had banned public use of Cantonese.
So by skipping Cantonese Nintendo trip lined local worries and fears that the PRC may begin pushing policies and encouraging private foreign entities ( like Nintendo) to skip Canton as It they produced such It would possibly face retribution.
If there Were such policies enacted it would push Hong Kong culture more and more fringe and eventually lead to the possible extermination of Hong Kong culture and independent identity.
By forcing Hong Kong into line with the rest of the PRC.
The old line was "One country, two systems" more and more however we are seeing the break down of that.

The Chinese government will ban the public use of Cantonese in Hong Kong right after they ban it in Guangzhou.

Seems like a classic case of first world problems to me.

On one hand you have children in Sichuan who needs to scale hundred-foot cliffs to get to school, on the other you have spoiled brats complaining about pokemon.

Another one of those Chinese mainland engulfing "us" story. There's nothing "unique" about Hong Kong "culture" it's just another Chinese city to many of us. Funny they never cared about this "uniqueness" under British open oppression rule.

It's not just Hong Kong though. Many regions in China share the same problem. People in Shanghai look down on people from Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Beijing but look up to foreigners of American or European descent.

God knows I'm familiar with what you're talking about, seeing as I've only had to deal with this kind of attitude from my parents all my life (we're from Shanghai).

However, what HK has demonstrated goes well beyond the typical snobbery and into downright bigotry. Shanghaiers would never call visitors to our fair city "locusts", and would never attack shoppers like they do in HK.

Lol I don't think it'll amount to anything more than online whining or public protests. All things considered, people who are financially well off are less welling to put their lives on the line.

An Italian court has acquitted a divorced father who offered to pay child support with pizza.

When Nicola Toso split from his wife Nicoletta Zuin in 2002, he agreed to pay child support for their daughter, who was then 6 years old, according to the Daily Telegraph. The local Il Gazzettino newspaper reported that the amount was 300 euros, or about $335, per month.

But when a crippling recession struck the southern European country in 2008, the 50-year-old professional pizza maker from Padua could no longer afford to hand over the support in cold, hard cash.

A judge ruled that Nicola Toso had not committed a crime by offering to pay child support to his ex-wife in pizzas.
Instead, he offered to stump up the equivalent sum in the form of pies, calzones and other meals made by his take-away business.

“In lieu of money, the defendant offered his ex-wife the same amount of compensation in the form of take-away pizzas from his workplace, an offer promptly rejected as ‘beggar’s change,’” said Judge Chiara Bitozzi in her ruling.

According to the Independent, Toso went on to remarry and have three more children. He shuttered his business in 2010, which is when Zuin filed a criminal complaint against him, alleging non-payment of child support. It culminated in a criminal case, which was heard at a courthouse in Padua last week.

Toso’s defense attorney argued that, despite enduring extremely tough times, he’d still fulfilled all his other custody obligations and even taken in his daughter in 2011 when her relationship with her mother broke down — after which Zuin was then supposed to pay 300 euros per month in maintenance to Toso.

Judge Bitozzi found there was no evidence of any crime being committed, and Toso was acquitted.

Child support laws are just screwed up. On the one hand, it makes life extremely difficult for law-abiding dads who want to do well by their children, while on the other hand, it is practically unenforceable against the dead-beat dads who don't give a damn about their kids.

This is similar to and no more serious than New Yorkers vs Texans vs Americans or Quebecois vs Canadians, just with some remnant Chinese civil war-, Cold War-, and colonialism-derived prejudices thrown in for good measure by...

However, what HK has demonstrated goes well beyond the typical snobbery and into downright bigotry. Shanghaiers would never call visitors to our fair city "locusts", and would never attack shoppers like they do in HK.

...can't bring themselves to address the more pressing, practical, and actual causes of their angst which is a changing world with economic imbalances requiring adaptation and action.
