, and it is a testament to how much it doesn’t work when government forces the notions of multiculturalism and diversity down folks’ throats to the point of those folks losing their own identities. Their own exceptionalism.

This particular movement is called the Identitarians, and behind the beardy hipster-ness, they talk directly to European leaders “about the migrant crisis as a colossal cultural and political event.”

For example: “you impose tolerance and diversity but you mean self-hatred, self-denial, and self-abolishment. You love and support the foreign and hate and fight what is our own. You want to talk us into believing that we have no identity, that we are too homogeneous. We shall be repressed and replaced. You preach of the diversity of cultures yet you destroy them.”

It’s pretty moving stuff, actually. Especially if you’re paying any attention at all to what’s been happening in the United States over the past few decades. It’s politically incorrect these days to even believe in American exceptionalism (what are you – raaaaaacist?). It’s not OK anymore to say that America is a melting pot, because people need to be able to celebrate their own special cultures and not that of simply being an AMERICAN, and therefore we should all be separated and segregated and whatnot (isn’t that what America is supposed to….oh wait….). It’s not OK to tell folks that if you come to this country, you better be prepared to freaking MELT.

Even though that was the point once upon a time. It’s America. You’re American. Freaking melt, people.

But that’s not OK anymore. Because diversity. And multiculturalism. And liberals.

You know.

Anywho, this video reminded me of all that.

Only those with poor confidence in their own culture and identity feel the need to defend that culture. Those with a strong culture instead embrace different cultures and make them their own.

To be clear the video is about Germany but the rant is about the US. I don't know what the situation is in Germany but the US is not Germany.

The ranter forgot to thank American corporations and supporters of free trade deals and foreign interventions for diversity and multiculturalism etc. He or she also forgot to thank them for lower wages, more foreign workers and bosses, both legal and illegal, thereby fewer jobs, more wars thereby more refugees, both legal and illegal, and the domino effects of more extreme local diversity differences, population density differences, and opportunity gaps within the US.

The ranter may well be confusing that accepting others believing and behaving differently is not the same as having to apologize or compromise their own beliefs and behaviors. Unless their belief and behavior is "my way or the highway".

There are also subtle but significant differences between culture and nationality, nationality and ethnicity, especially in large and diverse countries like the US, that a lot of people are unable to grasp. That's why the "melting pot" analogy may be insufficient and need to be paired with the "salad bowl" analogy. That's if the US still stands for freedom of religion, pursuit of happiness, and equal treatment of all its citizens among other things.

I think the following post from the following thread takes the most practical approach which also happens to abide by US ideals.

I would rephrase parts of the comment as follows to apply to everyone:

The challenge to all Americans if US demographics change in such a direction is whether they can similarly accept non-white, non-European, and/or non-Judeo-Christian diversity, which is not the denial of white, European, and/or Judeo-Christian diversity. And once again I don't know what is going on in Germany, but the US is not Germany.

The issue on immigration is not so much about diversity or multiculturalism per se but rather about integration and assimilation into the 'native' culture.

I'm probably speaking for millions of other Americans but I don't really care if you come here and worship your own god/s and build temples/mosque etc or dress in your native attire all day long. As a matter a fact I think those are or can be positives.

What I DO care about however is as part as part of your 'culture' you demand and expect changes to the fundementals of existing laws and culture to cater to your very specific needs.
I don't care if you build a mosque but I do care if your masjid blast azan prayers on loud speakers twice a day.
I don't care if you don't eat pork, I do care if you DEMAND bacon is banish from public schools.
I don't care if you pray 5 times a day.. more power to you actually however I do care if you block off city blocks so 500 people can pray en masse in the middle of a public street.
I don't care if you think you God/s is superior than mine but I do care if you think you are somehow superior to me due to that because you aren't.

Basically what I'm trying to say is you ain't special so stop acting like you are. I've met some genuinely 'special' people in my life and one thing they ALL have in common is not a SINGLE one of them thought they are... and that's part of what made them special to begin with.

Fair enough and I agree with you guys conceptually. The tricky thing is in reality all the general terms "reasonably absorb", "need", "assimilate/integrate", and "special" all have to be specifically defined and any specification comes with strings attached.
