US newest DDG commissioned in San Diego

The newest Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer, DDG 115, is named for U.S. Marine Corps Sgt. Rafael Peralta from San Diego, who was killed in 2004 in Iraq and posthumously awarded the Navy Cross for heroism.

Peralta smothered an enemy grenade with his body to absorb the majority of the lethal blast and shrapnel and saved the life of two U.S. soldiers with him in the battle of Fallujah.

USS Rafael Peralta is the 65th Arleigh Burke class destroyer. It is equipped with the Aegis Baseline 9 Combat System which includes an Integrated Air and Missile Defense (IAMD) capability incorporating Ballistic Missile Defense 5.0 Capability Upgrade and Naval Integrated Fire Control-Counter Air capability.

The ship's IAMD radar will provide increased computing power and radar upgrades that improve detection and reaction capabilities against modern air warfare threats, according to the website of U.S. Navy.

Interesting

This year marks 3 decades of Arleigh Burke production

72 units in 30 years

Rate is 2.4 units per year between Bath iron and Ingalls

Type 052C/D is 19 units in 7 years

Rate is 2.7 units per year between JNCX and DL

Obviously Chinese yards have much shorter time scale

Also AB is heavier

It is official. The AMDR aka SPY-6(V)1 is officially validated by the USN to have a +20dB.

The Air and Missile Defense Radar program set a requirement for the SPY-6(V)1 sensor to be 30 times more sensitive than the SPY-1. The Navy has validated that the new sensor has a decibel measurement of “+20dB” compared to the legacy radar, according to a Raytheon document approved by the Navy for public release.
“SPY-6(V)1 is approximately 20dB more sensitive than SPY-1 -- nearly 100 times -- which translates to more than three times the original requirement,” said Scott Spence, director of naval radar systems, told Inside Defense. “SPY-6 also delivers a significant increase in range to the legacy radar.”
Source: Inside Defense May 3,2019

This is a significant development and achievement. The AMDR planned for the Flight III started with a target of +15dB. This was officially reported earlier this year that the AMDR achieved a +16dB. This article now confirms it is being raised to +20dB.

In order to grasp the significance, it needs to be translated into meaningful perspective i.e.

+15 dB = 32 sensitivity
+16 dB = 40 sensitivity
+20 dB = 100 sensitivity

translating sensitive into range means
32 sensitivity = 2.38 X SPY-1(V)D
40 sensitivity = 2.51 X SPY-1(V)D
100 sensitivity = 3.16 X SPY-1(V)D

The SPY-1(V)D is conservatively estimated to have a detection range of 307 km against a 0.03 m2 target. This RCS is VLO territory.
With the AMDR this range is now extended to 970 kms against a 0.03 m2. When paired against a SM-3, it would make the S400 seriously outclassed. Potentially this also mean a J-20 is at risk out to a 970 km threat envelop from a Flight III vessel.

The other significant development is the 24 RMA planned for back-fit to existing Flight IIs and earlier is achieving the +15 dB sensitivity originally planned for the Flight III. This will significantly expand the kill chain envelop of a networked group of Burkes.
