That's an Oliver Hazard Perry (FFG7) class frigate, can't make out the hull number so I can't tell you which one it is. Could be Australian as they operate them too.

Re: US Military pic thread

Defiently an OHP class FFG. But it could be RAN(Austraila). When was the picture taken?

Anyway I have not been posting too many pics here because only a few forum members check them out and the USN has been posting way too many pictures of the USNS Mercy...:(

So today I will post some aircraft on the flight deck of various CVN/CV's..

USS Jimmy Carter (SSN 23)

Silverdale, Wash. (Aug. 16, 2006) - The Sea Wolf-class attack submarine USS Jimmy Carter (SSN 23) sits moored in the Magnetic Silencing Facility at Naval Base Kitsap Bangor for her first deperming treatment. The deperming process reduces a ships electromagnetic signature as she travels through the water. Jimmy Carter is the third and final submarine of the Sea Wolf-class. A unique feature of the Jimmy Carter is a 100-foot hull extension called the Multi-Mission Platform, which provides enhanced payload capabilities, enabling the submarine to accommodate the advanced technology required to develop and test a new generation of weapons, sensors and undersea vehicles.

Re: US Military pic thread

There's an idea, the USN used the name Jimmy Carter for a sub so it couldn't be used for a CVN; JC wasn't very popular with the Navy so didn't (in their eyes) deserve the honour of having a CVN named after him as his Administration tried to end CVN production in favour of smaller vessels. Now that members of Congress are trying to force the Navy to name the next CVN USS Gerald Ford perhaps they could quickly name a smaller vessel after him so that the name is no longer available for such an important ship.

You are so right. That's the same reason the USS Hyman G. Rickover (SSN 709) name was given to a sub. So Rickover, the father of the nuclear navy, name was not placed on a CVN. It was well know that ADM Rickover absoultly hated carriers and naval avation. And of course that hate was returned in kind. Did you know that ADM. Rickover stopped wearing a uniform in the last 15 years or so of his carreer??..He was assigned to a speical CNO project i.e. Nuclear power.

Dear USN, Please name a LSC or fleet tug after G. Ford!!!! Not CVN-78!

An LSC and a fleet tug are useful vessels that are capable of going somewhere, so even they are inappropriate! Does the USN name unpowered barges? Or perhaps they could rename the car park at the Pentagon...

I've seen ADM Rickover in quite a few documentaries and I don't think I've ever seen him in uniform, even in clips from the fifties. Hardly setting a good standard. How about a poll of suitable names? Enterprise would obviously top the list, but the rest can be put forward for the other ships of the class;
Enterprise,
America,
Lexington,
Saratoga,
Yorktown,
Hornet,
you get the drift. I'm open to other suggestions, please feel free to post.

Re: US Military pic thread

CVN-78 names...This has been a matter of discussion in USN groups in Yahoo many times. Personally these are my favorites. Very similiar to Obi Wan..

CVN-78 should be the "Enterprise class". Period.

Yankee Station
For those of you historically challanged Yankee Station was the area in the Tonkin Gulf where the USN Cv's launched strikes against N. Vietnam and Vietcong targets. This was the longest sustained combat action by CV's in history. 1965-'73. And considering the fact that the USN has only one other ship named after any action during the Vietnam war this is apporiate.

America, Lexington, Saratoga, Coral Sea. ETC. Before the USS John F Kennedy (CV-67) was named in 1963 carriers where named after battles, famous ships or places.(There were some exceptions) I think the USN should return to that.
