NK would be no match for US air/naval power and they know this. Heck everyone knows it. The fear however is the thousands of arties and millions of rounds (some no doubt are NBC rounds) that will rain down on Seoul and other cities. Those unfortunately cannot be stop en masse. They cannot be jammed and has to be neutralize one at a time but it will be too late by then.
China is certainly not in an enviable position. They would prefer a buffer zone and at present time NK is it. A unified Korea or regime change would be a US ally or puppet state on their doorstep and that is something they would not want.
They are also fearful of ten of millions of confused, dazed and hungry NK refugees stemming into their northern border if things goes south which most definitely will. It would be a gargantuan disaster and lead to one of the biggest humanitarian crises in modern history.
KJU is basically a rogue leader and not very stable one at that. He certainly has zero loyalty to China but is taking full advantage of the strategic implications for reasons I stated above to his advantage.
That is basically the geopolitical situation of NK in a nutshell. My unprofessional opinion of course!
