What's the condition of these silos? I thought these were in need of maintenance?

To be fair we don’t know when the photo was taken.
Either way the design appears optimized for drag reduction. A bit of evolution convergence with PL-15 actually.
I have some questions. How much useful aero data can they gather like this on what i'm assuming is a subsonic/transonic plane? The missile doesn't spend much time in those speed regimes.
Or are they testing other things like vibrations in flight?
IMO this is more likely a radar testbed, it's probably meant to test the seeker
Edit: Also, this guy on SPF said N804X was still flying in 2024
Most of the time you fight in the transonic regime anyway. Not practical to test this on a fighter until basic stuff gets figured out first.
