So basically, I'm advocating for a Kuznetsov, except instead of having 24 eight cell launchers, have 96 eight cell launchers!

Ahem.. I've mentioned previously that having those VLS cells on or near the flight deck would interfere with flight operations. Those things generate a lot of exhaust. You could not recover aircraft in that situation. That being said having the "proper" escorts is the way to go.

The USN uses either three Arleigh Burkes or one Tico & two Arleigh Burkes. That should be enough AAW cover plus whatever Captive Air Patrol the ship is using.

Well, I thought when I said, 1,000 foot yacht with VLS on the deck meant that it was a Kuznetsov except it wasn't designed to launch aircrafts but missiles, so yeah, not sure why I didn't say Arsenal ship :V

Should the Captain of the Enterprise been relieved of his command of the Enterprise in the manner that he was?
Because he commanded the Enterprise through its "Shakedown" after its refit I would have thought they might have left him in command , until it returned from the 'Middle East"

The USN had no choice but to relieve him because of the unbelievable coverage by the media in the US. This story was the lead story on the main networks tv broadcast. Who ever has replaced him will be more than competent.

The railgun is a nice technology, but I think it's usfullnes in actual combat will have to be explored. It offers great opportunities. But I exspect that due to the energy requirements it will only appear on ships the size of the future CG(X) and bigger. On a carrier it probably doesn't make too much sense, as that ship should be even further away from a target then the 100nm range of such a weapon. Maybe if it can get small enough as a AA weapon. Something similar applies to LHDs / LHAs. So that only leaves a CG(X), with a big power reserve.
Already near the end of WWI the Germans used modified naval guns on railway mountings to fire at Paris at a range of 100 km. A tank gun in a howitzer type mounting firing sub caliber projectiles might well have a larger range. A similar gun of large caliber should reach or exceed your 100 nm.
So how should we use rail guns? Do you go for a large caliber rail gun with a range of 300 nm? What about a medium caliber anti aircraft rail gun, to achieve a much shorter time of flight and so an easier prediction of the position of the target? I'll just wait.

We had a fabulous gun in the 1970's called the Mk-71 MCLGS. It was a fully automatic 8-inch gun derived from those in the Des Moines Class cruisers in a large single mounting. 12 rounds per minute with 75 rounds in the loading drum beneath the turret.
It was tested four years at sea on USS Hull. Something like 2800 rounds were fired with only one misfire. The Spruance and Ticonderoga classes were designed to fit this gun on the forward gun mount, but the program was ended after a highly successful test and evaluation program. There was a laser guided round that tested successfully and rocket propelled rounds were under consideration for it. We walked away from a great gun. The prototype still sits out at Dahlgren, VA.

At the time a smooth bore gun like an over sized tank gun might have been considered giving a much higher muzzle velocity and range.
I remember a project to develop a round for the 155mm army gun with four fins on the tip on a surely extremely expensive bearing to guide the shell to its target. A guided smooth bore projectile must be much cheaper and can have a longer range.
