We don't know the whole truth yet, but the fact of the matter is that the American sailors were apprehended after their boats were adrift into Iranian waters for whatever reasons. They were taken into Iranian custody for awhile and than released along with US sailors boats that they came from. Adversary navy's or not they did treated them pretty good and that's saying a lot consider the contentious political history between these two nations. We can be thankful nothing worse could have happen. Yeah our pride may be hurt but...so what, the sailors lives were safe and back home to the US side.
The Iranians could've done what they usually did - make a much bigger fuss, parade the crews and the boats on the streets of Tehran, more camera footage showcasing everything from the MGs to the toothbrush in the sailors' backpacks, and dragged this business on with more brinkmanship, after all it was the Revolutionary Guard who caught the prize catch, those hardliners - but instead, very mild presentations on state TV newsreel, both sides buys into the technical glitch storyline (the details are irrelevant, as stuff like that only set the tone, which is what matters), a few sorry here and there, and the Riverine boats crews are allowed to leave - with their boats! This is so uncharacteristic of the Iranians as typically they'd keep the boats as trophies, a testament to their victories against the "Big Satan"...
In short, this time round both Washington and Tehran are equally keen to get this over and out of the news headlines, thus this incident was over in less than 48 hours...which could be a record when comes to US-Iran relationships.
Could it be that there's a bigger picture at play now, that neither side wants this to become an unexpected monkey wrench?
