U.S. Navy Development Squadron 5 Receives First LTV 38 Unmanned Undersea Vehicle
59nXNnl.jpg

Commander, Submarine Development Squadron 5 (CSDS 5), Detachment UUV, took delivery of Large Training Vehicle 38 (LTV 38), an unmanned undersea vehicle (UUV) Aug. 22. The delivery makes LTV 38 the first UUV to join the vehicle inventory used by detachment UUV at Naval Undersea Warfare Center Keyport.
[...]
As a UUV, LTV 38 is able to perform at a maximum depth of 1,000 meters for up to 72 hours. It is designed as a full-pressure hull vehicle, capable of both line of sight and over the horizon communications, and can also conduct limited autonomous contact avoidance maneuvers via acoustic sensors while anchored and such missions are conducted and controlled remotely.

UUVs allow naval submarines to safely gain access to denied areas with revolutionary sensors and weapons. These areas may be denied based on unacceptable risks to a submarine such as extremely shallow water, very poor acoustic conditions, or mined waters. UUVs provide unique capabilities and extend the "reach" of naval platforms while reducing the risk to the submarine and its crew.

The use of unmanned vehicles in the undersea environment is projected to grow for the Navy. During a recent visit to the Pacific Northwest, Chief of Naval Operations, Adm. Jonathan Greenert, told Sailors he envisions having autonomous underwater vehicles on patrol by the end of the decade.

Nuclear UAV drones could fly for months at a time

Nuclear-powered unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) that would increase operational flight durations from days to months are a technological possibility today, according to a feasibility study undertaken last year by Sandia National Laboratories and Northrop Grumman Systems Corporation. A nuclear power supply would additionally double the availability of electrical power to onboard systems, including weaponry, the study found.

The word nuclear appears nowhere in the project summary obtained and published by the Federation of American Scientists (FAS), but there are numerous indications that this was indeed the prime power source under investigation. Though the project summary euphemistically refers to a focus on "power technologies that went well beyond existing hydrocarbon technologies," the FAS identifies words such as "safeguards," "decommissioning and disposal," and "political conditions" that prevent such technology seeing the light of day (for now, at any rate) which seem to strongly suggest the examination of nuclear technology.

On the 27th August the USS Vella Gulf was seen headed south bound out of the Black Sea after spending 21 days in the area

I do not know which US navy vessel which will be next into the Black Sea but at this time when the Russian land forces have been deployed into Ukraine and made moves to capture Eastern Ukarine there is a clear absence of Western warships

USNI said:
The U.S. Air Force has identified the pilot of the Boeing F-15C Eagle who died in a Wednesday crash in Virginia.

Lt. Col. Morris “Moose” Fontenot, Jr. died following the Wednesday crashin the mountains outside of Deerfield, Va., according to the service.

Fontenot had joined the Massachusetts Air Guard’s 104th Fighter Wing in February after retiring from the U.S. Air Force. He was a combat veteran with several Middle East tours and had 17-years experience flying F-15s, according to a report from The Associated Press.

At the 104th, Fontenot served as the unit’s inspector general and was an instructor pilot. He was a 1996 graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy.

Searchers — who looked for Fontenot for two days — discovered the ejection seat was still with the fighter, Brig. Gen. Robert Brooks, commander of the Massachusetts Air National Guard, told reporters on Thursday but did not provide details, according to a report in the Associated Press.

“We just found evidence that the ejection seat was with the aircraft,” Brooks said.

He did not say if searchers had found Fontenot’s remains.

Fontenot on his way to Naval Air Station New Orleans, La. from Barnes Air National Guard Base in Westfield, Mass. for an radar upgrade when he reported an in-flight emergency.

At 9:05 a.m. air traffic controllers had lost track of the aircraft.

“Investigators said the jet hit the ground at a high rate of speed, leaving a deep crater and a large debris field in a heavily wooded area next to a mountain in the George Washington National Forest,” according to the AP.

The Air Force has begun an investigation into the cause of the crash.
