Was there any time in the history when the USA military procured /designed things that wasn't a colossal waste of money ?

As I run through the reports about the Norden Bombsight to the to the procurement of infantry weapons the same pattern emerge that visible today.

ARPANET?

A lot of people don't realize that it cost about as much money to develop the B-29 as the Manhattan Project to develop nuclear weapons.
Hugely expensive. Then both the B-29 bomber and the Fat Man bomb were copied by the Soviet Union. Which put the US in strike range of Soviet heavy bombers with civilization ending weapons.

Still at least those technologies actually worked in practice.

The Norden Bombsight is one of those "uber technologies" developed at great expense that in practice were utter crap. A Rube Goldberg device.
