Shadowy New Electronic Warfare System Has Been Installed On U.S. Navy 7th Fleet Ships

just this thread is abandoned

EW is an important component of the defensive shield. It is just not as popular as the CIWS and ESSM of the world because it lacks the physical attributes that we can easily relate as with the hardware. I believe the AN/SLQ-32(V) was instrumental in the successful defence against the several Houthi ASM launched against the USN. Overall SEWIP is an early detection, signal analysis, threat-warning system against anti-ship missiles. The problem with the advent of AESA seekers, the bandwidth and waveform generation is more complex requiring investments to keep pace against the newer threats.

The USN is currently rolling out Block 2 with RFI already gone out for Block 3. The mystery as reported in the drive article is how does this portable system fits into the scheme of things and what capability gap is it attempting to bridge in the interim.

I combed through all the recent updates on the SEWIP program and the one key capability between Block 2 and Block 3 is the focus on electronic attack. Block 2 is predominantly focused on sensing improvement via broadening of spectrum width and sensitivity. I suspect the shadowy hardware is associated with some form of electronic attack capability against ASM.

the USN is either incredibly slow, or the SEWIP is trashy (note the year):

could even be both like the USN now installing trash to "justify" funds spent on something not exactly working, as anti-torpedoes Jul 31, 2018 and I think you know I could go on

How did you derive a conclusion that the implementation may be trash or slow? What is your objective benchmark? The article is 2015 and so 4 years down the road the USN is still rolling out a system that requires both hardware and software upgrade to 140 vessels. Typically such upgrades will be done as part of scheduled maintenance.

but of course if you don't think the USN is piling up trash in the form of LCSs and Zumwalts, you probably won't get the point of 39 minutes ago post

Sorry but aren't we discussing SEWIP and not anti torpedoes, LCS and Zumwalts? Your argument would be what we constitute straw man from the point of logic.

Your reasoning is that because there are some problematic programs then every candidate by default would be similar in outcome. I think such reasoning is terribly misguided but carry on any way if it makes your day.
