Concerning the small arms ammunition, does anyone know if the Chinese 5.8mm round is in fact 5.8mm's, or is it 5.5mm (.22 of an inch), along with other rounds such as the 5.56mm NATO?
Also, is the measurement of the bullet taken from the groove, or the land, of the barrel?
As for the 5.56mm's stopping power, it is not really the case that it is low. The 5.56mm round came from the theory of combat taking place at distances of less than 300m's, with the vast majority being at 100m's or below, and so it is not surprising that the bullet should lack "stopping power", at greater distances. For its designed use, it is most effective. From a full length rifle barrel of 20-21 inches, the round will have sufficient velocity to fragment on yawing in flesh, at distances of 100-150m's. Such fragmentation causes extremely large temporary wound cavities, enough to just about garuntee incapacitate whomever is hit. Also, given that the 5.56mm M855 NATO round is semi-armour piercing FMJ, it penetrates more steel than 7.62mm NATO.
