LOL You don't need a huge military for trade but you do need a huge military if you have old territories you need to reclaim, new ones you need to defend, and you also don't want to be susceptible to military instigation/escalation/blackmail by the resident superpower who's desperate to keep his spot amidst your rise. You think America would ever just watch its own edge get cut away without exploring every avenue of stopping it? If the US never went around the world (or Asia) starting shit, China wouldn't need a massive military buildup.
My point eactly, so why the lol?

No the Ukrainian navy was completely destroyed by Russian forces in the opening hours of the initial invasion; they may have thought that it could have been an Ukrainian merchant vessel however that would still be a civilian target non the less. As for the Estonian ship its likely to hit a Russian mine.

With how stingy the Russian has been with their munitions hard to imagine them wasting ashm on merchant vessel... On that thought, has Russia conducted any boarding action against merchant ships?

The Russians seized two Ukrainian merchant vessels earlier in the week; and I believe a smaller Romanian ship had been seized as-well but I didn’t see much supporting evidence for that actually occurring.

Ukranian special forces and operators have been fighting very hard in Gostomel this afternoon.

From what I’ve seen they’ve eliminated a small VDV force that had entered from the north along the T10002; this however was more than likely an expeditionary force sent to probe Gostomels defenses.

Ukraine is a story of tragedy. Ukraine was once the core of the Soviet Union. It was almost more core than Russia itself. All 3 major Cold War Soviet leaders were Ukrainian: Khrushchev and Brezhnev were both full Ukrainian, Gorbachev was mixed Ukrainian and Russian. In the Soviet days, Ukraine had higher GDP per capita than Russia.

After the end of the Cold War, Ukraine fell on hard times. While Russia still has their resources, defense and nukes, Ukraine was left with the industry. Due to shock therapy and attempts to integrate with the west, their industrial base became uncompetitive and unable to function. So while Russia itself slowly crawled back as a resource, arms and energy (both the actual energy and the infrastructure like pipelines, reactors, petrochemical, etc) provider, Ukraine had nothing as it's industrial base fell apart due to lack of business. This economic situation less to political radicalization, which drove further instability, which led to 2014, which led to today.

The only country harder hit by the Soviet collapse could be North Korea. Ukraine went from basically ruling Russia to being a basket case overnight.
Still I feel the best way out for them is to stay neutral. Maintain good relations with Western Europe and Russia. Get the economy going first. Just dun flirt with NATO and anger the bear. Also dun let neo nazi become a problem. They, for good or bad, are geographically located next to a huge power. Things have to be kept in perspective. They can't elect a clown and expect him to lead them out of a sticky situation.

Having some remote operated t-72 full of concrete would be interesting to have to probe defenses, a bit like the target drones they are using to probe air defenses.
