The timing of the invasion, mere hours after the end of the Winter Olympics, shows that Putin spoke with Xi about his invasion plans. It would be unthinkable for Putin to launch this gambit without securing Chinese economic backing.
Therefore, this was no emotional outburst. It had been in the planning for weeks. Not saying invasion was inevitable, it could have been one of the contingencies, but it was definitely in the plans.

The preliminary acts of: procuring thousands of rounds of ammo, a bunch of guns, computing ballistic trajectories, booking the ideal geo-spatially situated location, that all preceded some nuts shooting of 600 some folks in Vegas, all took weeks of planning, at least!
If Russia could take Odessa and Mariupol, Russian troops would move north. Kyiv would be surrounded from all fronts. Ukrainian's troops in the eastern and northeast front would be encircled. If that happened, Ukrainians can either try to break through the encirclement or dig in waiting for the fight of annihilation.
Reddit is on full astroturf mode. Every frontpage post is about how Ukraine is winning or about some meaningless "token of support" like putting ukrainian flags on some stupid videogame.
