I think overall their strategy is sound, and their gains speak for itself. But Russia is still fighting a 20th century war in 21st century.
I think Russia might be holding these units in reserve in case of NATO counterattack.
What Russia is doing in principle is detrimental to China. They've thrown aside the respect for the sanctity of other nation's integrity and sovereignty by annexing Crimea and recognizing the two rebel republics in the east of the Ukraine. By not overtly reprimanding Russia for its transgressive behavior China is demonstrating to the world that its are self-centered: as long as you respect our integrity and sovereignty, we don't really care what you do with third party nation's integrity and sovereignty. In principle, Russia must hold itself to no rules when fighting the expansion of NATO. In effect, it makes no sense to sincerely criticize an ally while truly supporting its actions.
And Ukraine don't have a 21st century army...Not many countries can fight a 21st century war.
Interesting. Considering the fact that the Chinese embassy is still active there and the Chinese's response to the West on Ukraine, I wouldn't be surprised if Zelensky secretly asked China to convince the Russians to negotiate. Zelensky may be openly defiant, but as a leader he is trying every avenue of approach to protect his nation without showing weakness.Kremlin says they are ready to travel to Minsk for negotiations.
