Re: U.S. Presidentail Candidate Mitt Romney's Plans for the US Navy

Romney has said that he will re-open the F-22 production line that was closed due to Obama's action.

And I do not think he will go around bowing to world leaders like Obama

Those two things make a strong case for his election

Sep 12, 2012 – Lockheed Martin would support restarting the F-22 Raptor production line if Republican Presidential candidate Mitt Romney were to be elected ...

An FB-22 would make it difficult for all the new stealth players to close the gap

How? Please explain. It now sounds as if it involves magic.

Easy. The original F-22 was designed from a requirement developed in 1981 and entered service in 2005. That means that F-22 is at the very least 30 years old in concept and design. Today we have the new stealth players, J-20 and Russian T-50 working hard to catch up to a 30 year old design.

And J-20 and T-50 are several years away from entering service, where F-22 has already slid down the learning curve of technology and tactics.

Any new version of F-22 (FB-22) would be years ahead of these new aircraft that are fighting to just enter service. FB-22 would be building on advancements in materials, engines, avionics, and weapons all pioneered by F-22.

T-50 and J-20 are using F-22 as the yardstick to measure themselves by.

FB-22 would extend that yardstick even further by making the measurement target ever moving.

I'm not sure it's as simple as that, because a stealth fighter development is not just about designs but also the means to manufacture them reliably, so maybe we need to ask why, despite the plane has been in development since 1981, it did not entered service until 2005. If you argue that the requirement for the plane when it entered service in 2005 is no longer the same as it was in 1981, then we're no longer comparing to a 30 years old design. If you say that the requirement is still the same, then that means the technology base took more time to catch up, in any case it may be possible to design something really wonderful pretty early on, but lacking the technologies to implement it until later (Just to be fair, like how the J-20 is still waiting for their own indigenous engine).

The US military edge over everyone else in the world is advantageous nationally, and I'm not worried about either candidate weakening it so significantly that it would have a long term detrimental effect.

What I am worried about is how and whether our national advantage is shared fairly among all Americans. If this internal system isn't straightened out sooner rather than later it will have a long term detrimental effect.

On that note I don't think that the Romney and Ryan ticket has the better plan for the country.

The number one priority that should be on Americans' mind shouldn't be foreign policy but the economy. What makes the live of a diplomat 100 times more important than the lives US personnel stationed in A'stan where 2000 American lives have already been lost. Stevens' father publicly asked the candidates to refrain from politicising his son's tragic death.

A recovering economy would mean less Americans committing suicide or going into deep depression.

Relax. The economy is fine. Don't believe the hype

All the other stealth players are fielding aircraft that are just in their early test stages. None are operational. And experience matters. Counting F-117 and F-22, FB-22 would be third generation stealth.

Much has been learned along the way. And the other stealth players will have to learn those lessons one way or another.
