So the USN is sending the George Washington CVN and its escorts to help out the phillippines, while the RN's HMS Daring is also going there.

Now would be an excellent moment for the PLAN to send an 071 and a frigate or two, but I feel the political climate isn't quite there yet, and their ships aren't completely on call to be ready for MOOTW deployment within a short time span.

I too am waiting for the PLAN to muster up an humanitarian task force to send to the Republic of the Philippines. No excuses..just do it..they have the experience in deploying ships on a constant basis..just do it.

The Pentagon is dispatching its ready-duty flattop in the Asia-Pacific region and three escort ships to provide relief and support to the typhoon-stricken Philippines, the U.S. Pacific Fleet said Monday evening.

The order from Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel cuts short a Hong Kong port visit by one day for the ships: aircraft carrier George Washington, cruisers Cowpens and Antietam, and destroyer Mustin. The crews have been recalled from liberty and are getting ready to “make best speed” for the disaster zone, according to a Defense Department news release, a journey that will take about two days.

“We’re going to get George Washington underway from Hong Kong early,” said Pacific Fleet spokesman Cmdr. Steve Curry. “They’re making preparations to get underway this evening, Hawaii-time.”

The Philippines government has requested relief from the U.S., whose assets are being directed by Marine Corps Forces Pacific, after what is believed to be one of the worst tsunamis in Philippines history, Typhoon Haiyan.

The ships will be joined by supply ships Charles Drew and Richard E. Byrd, Curry said. A second destroyer, the Lassen, also got underway Sunday and is headed to the Philippines, where up to 13-feet of typhoon surge wiped away seaside homes and dragged residents out to sea. The death toll is feared to be in the thousands.

“The Marines are there now,” Curry said. “We’re positioning our ships to get down that way to assist, if needed

I agree. The 071 would come in very handy in terrible a time like this. I say load her up with food, medicine, blankets etc and send her on her way.

It would definitely be a nice gesture, to show that despite territorial disputes, humanitarian missions still trump politics.

However I think the PRC is too conservative in using its military forces abroad even for "acceptable missions". Just look at how long it took for them to send taskforce to Aden. They are very wary about how their military power is perceived.
That said it'll be great news tomorrow if we hear the PLAN are choosing to send an 071 and a few frigates or destroyers to help out. Not nearly as comprehensive as a carrier and it's escorts of course, but still notable.

This is all assuming the PRC isn't too busy handling its own response to the typhoon when/if it hits, and that the navy is ready and competent enough to deliver aid without making a fumble of things.

There's just some flooding in southern China. Nothing so disastrous as what happened in the Philippines.

Time for the PLAN to man up and get under way for humanitarian relief in the Republic of the Philippines...no excuses..just do it!

Re: World News Thread & Breaking News!!

I suppose if the Philippines requests aid china will probably be more likely to send some ships. China is loathe to act unless there is one invitation.

What's the international law of sending military ships and aircraft for aid anyway? If a nation doesn't request it but you send a few ships in its waters and start choppering in supplies, is that a breach of law?

The PLAN has always been conservative and unless the Philippines directly requested help from China, I doubt they'd send any warships like 071 there even for humanitarian aid. Some cargo ships loaded with sanitary and medical equipment sound more like it.

Did the Philippine government ask? Let them ask first because after all the charges the Philippine government has made against China, it would be highly improper without being asked for aid.

Not hearing so much about Chinese help in the fear of political turmoil between the two nations. Here is a news from Vietnam confirming that China has decide to donates 1 million US dollar, and may help more after consulting Manila and disaster aid agencies. 1 million for China sounds like I donate a cent, right? Vietnam also donates 1 million USD although it is also a direct victim of the Haiyan after the Philippines.

Don't forget to add in (if possible) all the over seas Chinese help as well.
