it has a very coincidental position kind of where some have speculated before that a aircraft launching device would be placed...

but honestly i have my doubts too

No. We have known what this ship is intended to be, for about 4 years now.

It is an LHD/LHA with an EMCAT. Its primary mission is amphibious assault, and the marines get their own organic CAS and ISR from drones that will be launched from the EMCAT. It will never operate alone, it will operate in an ARG likely in conjunction with a CSG (to use USN nomenclature).

Can we please stop pretending like this isn’t one of the most “telegraphed” and clearly/fully known new class of PLAN ship.
I don't see any explanation of why such a large catapult is necessary for an amphibious assault ship. What, precisely will be launched by this device? To claim that "We have known what this ship is intended to be, for about 4 years now." dosen't make it true. We do not know precisely what this ships mission will be mainly because there is no known analogue for it in the West. No Western amphibious assault ship possesses a catapult so what ever mission this ship is intended to perform it is not a mission that any Western ship currently performs so I prefer to watch and wait to see just what this ship ends up being. I do not think it good practice to turn assumptions into proven established facts. We will have to wait and see what the Chinese Navy intends this ship to be.

Im just curious about the y shaped hole and what it might be used for.

Nobody seems to know and a just threw out a guess based on some video i saw by some chinese military 'expert' on youtube who has a channel that has 50k subscribers. I think its called eurasia naval, the dude is usually accurate, but i read a comment somewhere that he may be having doubts about this as well. we will see if its another catapault or something else...

I do not see anything which corresponds to a "y shaped hole" and neither you nor anyone else has actually specified on the image what is being referred to as that.

If you are talking about another catapult trench on the right/starboard side of the ship on the bow, frankly I'm not sure how one could view it as that considering there is no trench at all there, and the flight deck on the starboard side of the bow is already sealed up to deck level. If there were a catapult trench, you would see it quite obviously like you do on the left/port side of the ship.

All of which is to say -- there is nothing to see to begin with. Chances are what you are seeing are just weld lines between modules.

- Amphibious assault ship

- 40t elevators

- Well deck (iirc)

- EMCAT(s)

- Able to operate in hot, humid, and/or dry climates

- Ability to carry/operate drones (iirc)

Exactly what details in the tender are causing confusion for you (even when considering them in conjunction with the other details)?

If you could give us the source in the original Chinese, the doubters will be more satisfied.
