Title says it all. I was just tickled by CNBC throwing shade at putting "theft" in quotations.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on Tuesday said the Trump administration will look into whether Chinese artificial intelligence models have been distilled from American models, stating that the government does not support “IP theft.”

Friendly reminder that the Trump admin has been hit with multiple copyright strikes for using various music without permission or paying royalties on the White House twitter and at Trump rallies. So yes, they very much support IP theft by the literal definition.

Anthropic agreed to pay $1.5 billion in September to settle a class action lawsuit with a group of authors, who alleged that the company illegally downloaded books from pirated databases. The New York Times sued OpenAI and Microsoft in 2023, alleging that the companies infringed on copyright by using its intellectual property to train models.

When you think about it this whole mess started because he thought that woman selling out her leader in Venezuela was actually a war and got too bigheaded. He thought Iran would be the same thing and now got bogged down in this mess.
