It's pure empty threat. US no longer even have access to any of the nations bordering Afghanistan to invade it, let alone manage the logistics of operating Bagram.China would looove to funnel arms to the Taliban via Pakistan if US decides to reinvade Afghanistan.
They will likely enable some kind of loophole exemption for emigres they deem necessary. I don't expect a total H1B nuke to last given the pressure from big tech. The funny part with the effective H1B ban isn't really Indians, yes for Americans this is about India and it's Indian H1B pipeline that'll be most effected, but people forget H1B is for everyone and everyone who's actually skilled also uses H1B
Trump didn't just crack down on fake H1B, Trump killed the whole thing and didn't come up with a replacement. American workers might or might not be able to make up for fake Indian H1Bs, but America does not remotely have the ability to replace all the real skilled workers that's been cut off.
So while the discourse is about India, the real fun is in everyone else.
The real humanitarian crisis: "pls redeem H1B, or we wil flud ur borders"
Apparently US raising H1B fees will result in a humanitarian crisis, according to the Indian government. Also Indian government is directly aiding the H1B holders to return to the US.
He should threaten to invade Afghanistan for another 20 yearsHe should threaten Afghanistan with 1000% tariffs
If Americans are smart enough to know the difference they wouldn't need H1B to begin with. They will likely enable some kind of loophole exemption for emigres they deem necessary. I don't expect a total H1B nuke to last given the pressure from big tech.

Edit: well, there we have it - under applied heat and pressure, the best grilled tacos are formed
its only really tight in Beijing and Shanghai. A major reason is the vastly easier gaokao in Beijing and Shanghai. It is loosening for uncompetitive cities. It makes no sense to restrict people settling when it is already being drained.
In some tier 1 cities it has only become tighter.
I am not advocating migration control for sake of it. I view it as something like Chinese economic system: benign control of natural process to balancing out its negative tendencies. Swarming into better city makes sense at individual level, but can be bad for the country.
nothing to do with DEI, only with population to university ratio. Guangdong is rich but its gaokao is hard mode, Henan is poor but its gaokao is also hard mode. 北京大学 = 北京人大学 is a common meme in China. There's also quantitative data to back this up on request.Pretty sure gaokao is easier in poor places due to DEI requirements.
I don't think its really a TACO moment. Everytime Trump does one of these, there is always leeway to acknowledge and adjust accordingly to realities that are pure common sense, like how its not smart to deprive his tech donors of 50% of their work force overnight in one fell swoop.
