Wish.com was a American company started by former google engineers in SV that wanted to be aliexpress/taobao but ended up being stomped out by aliexpress and temu in the us. The meme is probably to jokingly bash China goods, but the joke is on them since the chinese e-com companies prevailed and wish.com is near death.

Many people here were whining about the negotiations in London as soon as they finished. As if Trump and co. were ever trustworthy enough to tell the whole truth.

Nice, I knew China wouldn't disappoint in this regard. Though I wish they'd tighten restrictions to non-mil US companies to prevent diversion & also ban other REs that haven't been controlled so far like ytterbium. No way Nvidia chips are being lifted anyway.

There is room for negotiation, but the US doesn't want to take it.
I'm a little surprised that China was willing to offer that. Limiting American production of high-tech weapons for the next decade is an incredibily potent advantage, and it's not worth giving up for just a few years of high-end semiconductors.

However, I'm not surprised that the Americans didn't take up the offer. They are very poor at planning for the long term, and in American politics, giving up stances that were adopted in the name of national security is very difficult to justify. Maybe they're already thinking of ways to either smuggle rare earths or to take the civilian allocations and give it to military contractors.

any idea when US MIC's rare earth stockpile runs out?
Lockheed Martin is supposed to have enough for F-35 production up until the end of this year. After that, they said that they expect the US government to give them priority for future supply.

The crazy thing is that if it was the USA who had rare earths monopoly, then you can be sure they would have long deprived and sanctioned China from ever using any of their rare earths whatsoever, not even civilian Chinese companies would be allowed to use them, and that would have been non negotiable. Shows just how hostile the USA has turned towards China.
So any little concession or deal China makes is just to buy a bit more time and not completely cut off all trade ties, since the US Will only keep increasing sanctions on China with each passing month/year as China keeps growing. There is no turning back from that, except if China agrees to give up its development, growth and moving up the value chain, which we all know is unacceptable. So tensions are only going to increase with time not reduce unfortunately.

I think the difference is that while the US may want China to fail, China does not actually want the US to do so. They understand that the US is one of their best customers and that a failed US isn't going to really benefit China overall. Suppressing the US military has major advantages, but the US overall? Not so much.
