An SCMP article has come out which clarifies that China's rare earth export controls have not changed due to the Geneva meeting, and the only permits which have been granted recently have been for customers located in Europe (one of which is Volkswagen) and Vietnam. Excerpt from it:
"In Monday’s agreement – the result of two days of talks in Geneva, Switzerland – Beijing said it would suspend the non-tariff countermeasures it had imposed since April 2, which would imply the removal of the export controls on rare earths it enacted on April 4.

But while China’s Ministry of Commerce has removed 28 American firms from a trade blacklist they were added to in January, it did not explicitly touch on the rare earth export controls. Ministry spokeswoman He Yongqian did not provide an update when asked about the issue at a press conference on Thursday.

Control over rare earths is considered an

in any trade negotiation, as China has spent time and money to master the difficult mining and smelting process. Although the US has copious reserves of the minerals, it lacks the facilities and expertise to refine them, and it would take years to build an industrial chain to rival that of its chief competitor.

That ace was played against the United States in early April, when Beijing decided to retaliate against US President Donald Trump’s “reciprocal tariff” blitz affecting nearly all of global trade – a countermove with an outsize impact on some American businesses.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk said in an April 22 earnings call the company’s flagship humanoid robot, Optimus, “was affected by the magnet issue from China, because the Optimus actuators in the arm do use permanent magnets”, and “those were affected by the supply chain”.

Musk said he hoped Tesla will get a licence to use the magnets, saying they were “obviously” not intended for military purposes."

Sovereign wealth fund of Saudi Arabia is $900 billion. Qatar is $500 billion.

Of the $600 billion pledged by Saudi Arabia, it would still be win if half of that materializes into actual investments. Would be spread out over many years of course.

It’s a signal to Trump and America that we plan on partnering with you for the long term.
Credit where it's due; this is the first thing that Trump has done since he took office. Trump revived the US-Saudi relationship back to where it was historically. He was expected to be terrible with democratic leaders like in the EU (and he certainly did not disappoint those who wanted to see that circus), but he is known to have an excellent relationship with MBS because they share the same dictator energy (which is not an insult because very often, dictators' words are more reliable than those of democratic leaders). His fallout with Netanyahu also helped him in the Arab world.

He is also buoyed by being a breath of fresh air to MBS compared to what Biden was, which was inconceivably stupid. I remember that when Biden first took office, MBS prepared a lavish gift for him, a mansion worth hundreds of millions of dollars for him to enjoy whenever he visited the Arab nation and before he could even present it, Biden went on TV to insult MBS for his human rights abuses (notably the killing of Khashoggi). This led relations to become so bad that Saudi TV constantly aired comedic sketches making fun of Biden for his senility, and once, MBS had even left an American representative waiting for him to arrive to a 7pm meeting only to go to sleep and show up the next day. Trump definitely pulled that relationship back as expected.

They say we are destined to become the monster that we fight. Interestingly, Trump, who called Joe Biden Sleepy Joe, is now seen falling asleep on live TV next to MBS.

The U.S. Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) has revised its wording regarding restrictions on Huawei's Ascend chips, softening the original statement:

Original :

"Issuing guidance that using Huawei Ascend chips anywhere in the world violates U.S. export controls." *(Pic 1)*

Revised :
"Issuing guidance alerting industry to risks of using PRC advanced computing ICs, including specific Huawei Ascend chips." *(Pic 2)*

Note: The actual text of the two attached guidelines remains unchanged for now, and it's unclear whether they will be revised.

LOL

There’s serious incompetence inside BIS. Or is that an understatement for both administrations???

DJT trump show is just getting started. Less than 6 months in office.

Overall the Republicans are smarter than the Democrats.

LOL Of all the mistakes he's made, getting 1 thing done correctly, and 1 thing that's completely expected, which is to NOT offend another dictator whom he's known to get along with, isn't really the shot in the arm you make it out to be. He single-handedly forced the US into a contraction when it was growing at 2.4% for 2024 Q4 under Biden and that's just the biggest, most visible problem he's caused.
Overall the Republicans are smarter than the Democrats.
I would say the opposite. Democrats are usually more educated and tech-savy, the ones that aren't some useless purple haired gender-mash freaks sitting in Starbucks planning revolts against the police. Silicon Valley is completely reliant on democrat workers in tech. Republicans, especially Trump supports, are kinda just angry blue collars like farmers who scream they want higher tariffs and then end up bankrupt from those tariffs.

Why? So far Trump hasn't given up anything in his so-called deals. It's been about what everyone else has to give to Trump. Does he think he can do it in China's house. I'm sure the Repanicans will like it. Don't go to China unless China gets something out of it and not less than what Trump expects for himself. He was mistaken to believe the US had all the leverage using tariffs. Republicans in general want US power to be exercised and China exposed their limit. I'm sure they didn't learn their lesson.

Interesting that he is turning on Israel it seems.

In other words no one is making deals with Trump hence he'll just have to decide for them. How embarrassing for Trump that no one is bothering to why he has to go through this ruse. Let me guess... it'll be 10%. He does have to save face.
Did he forget he already set the tariff rate on liberation day?
