Most US software gets used out of habit and inertial due to their first mover advantage. Google is objectively a pretty mediocre search engine with massive built-in flaws to facilitate monetisation. People use it because they are used to using it. But if Google magically went away, there are literally dozens of functionally identical, if not superior alternatives people could turn to immediately.
All an American software ban would do is force the world to immediately turn to the next alternate in line.
It would be the chip bans but only 1000 times worse for the US, as it has no stranglehold over software as it’s incredibly easy to crack them and run without licenses and make functionally infinite copies even where there are no readily available alternatives. American software revenue will basically disappear and the knock on effects will be exponentially worse as all of the support services like data centres, customer service and advertising all gets nuked.
If Trump did that, it might be the US Empire’s Berlin Wall moment, as this can genuinely collapse the US economy given its overwhelming reliance on services and finance, and make the USD the new Zimbabwean dollar.
But OTOH, if Trump eat any more TACOs, there is a genuine risk ICE might deport him to Mexico.
