And Chinese govt don't use Windows anyway

I hope that is true. But I expect people in China's government are just as lazy as most people are elsewhere: they use whatever is most convenient, and that is Windows. There is potential for the U.S. to cause enormous disruption in China, by using Windows' automatic update process to sneak a virus into China's key computers.

Lol they don't just use Windows.
They use pirated Windows.

Thought that's based on what I know from 10 years ago.

Xi Jinping’s strategy probably revolves around outlasting Trump.

Your assessment that China has not attacked seriously yet is correct, but it’s not necessarily a disadvantage. Every trench stormed leads to a loss of men. Trump has pissed off many important people in and outside US and caused his people suffering.

Xi has made a coordinated retreat, partitioning off damage from society at large, forcing US to pay an unsustainable price (literally, their govt can’t afford paying out promised bailouts) for every inch.

Beijing holds a couple of devastating moves in their hand, involving the mass sell off of US debt, seizure of US asset (particularly Trump family), export bans in electronics & processed materials and taking counter hostages using itself or Russia (last I checked, Ivanka and Jared both frequent China, and Putin has some sway over Trump family in general).

There’s two different theories of how they will come in play:

1. Not until China gets cornered. Every tactic would incur losses to Chinese society and international credibility just like use of similar tactics by the US. If the trade war can be won without using these tactics, then it would be an optimal victory that costs China little/no credibility.

2. When Trump’s personal position has reached a breaking point. Trump’s power has been waning since his inauguration. As of now, there is an ongoing mass arrest of Trump associates along with a shutdown which many people claim is a stalling act.
Once the US command structure collapses, Xi would attack while they are at their most vulnerable.

Is the current govt’s strategy optimal? Mao would certainly have done differently, but would that be better?

Xi’s stance comes from valuing the lives of his own people above the lives of non citizens, so doing whatever he can to make sure they are impacted as little as possible.

Mao on the other hand valued Chinese and foreigner civilians the same, that is to say, not much at all. What he valued was unity. He would be happy over the trade war because it would have united the people. Likewise, he would focus on attacking US unity while Xi Jinping focuses on attacking US livelihoods.

In my opionion, Mao would be much better than Xi in trade war. But on the other hand, Xi is much better in actual governance.

Mao and economics don't mix. That's terribly clear to everyone who knows history. The only place in a trade war where Mao would be better than Xi would be the shouting match he gets into with Trump that could make you feel proud and pump your chest and say, "CHINESE DON'T BOW TO ANYBODY!" And then after that the economy would go directly to North Korea level... well, not that it would have ever left that level if Mao was still alive.

When (not "if") your computer stops working, don't blame me.
Especially don't blame me if your computer infects other people's computers.
I don't use ANY version of Windows. (I use Linux.)

Oops, when I said "CIA", I should have said "NSA", which is still an American spy agency. Microsoft's connections to the latter are very well known, and China should be extremely wary. In fact, China should have developed a Windows replacement years ago.

I found more information concerning government procurement of the special Windows 10 edition developed for the Chinese government. Leaving it here for those who might find it interesting:

You need to have a little less fear in US and a little more confidence in China's potential.

Ohhhh Nonononono, you misunderstand me. I have the utmost confidence and optimism in China, especially that it will emerge on top of the US in the coming years.

My comment meant that economics and trade wars are very complicated and intricate in a global economy. If moves are made without thorough understanding and consideration of the downstream effects, they would almost certainly result in mistakes. Mao would have made mistakes that are self-detrimental, just like Trump is doing. Trump attacks China's economy, and ends up widening the trade gap and harming/dividing the US while China's economy is still slated to grow right on schedule at over 6.5%. Xi won't make rash decisions that turn out to be self-harming mistakes but Mao is almost certain to.

China urges U.S. to stop suppressing Chinese telecom companies

China on Thursday expressed firm opposition to the abuse of export control measures of the United States and urged U.S. lawmakers to stop the proposed bill targeting Huawei, ZTE and other Chinese telecommunications equipment companies.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying made the comments at a press briefing in response to some U.S. lawmakers' introduction of a bill that would ban exports of U.S. chips and components to Chinese telecom companies, such as Huawei Technologies Co Ltd, ZTE Corp or other Chinese firms.

"Such a move shows the extreme arrogance of certain U.S. lawmakers as well as their extreme lack of confidence," said Hua.

"It is obvious to all that the true intention of the U.S. side is to use all kinds of state apparatus to suppress and block Chinese hi-tech companies," Hua said.

China opposes U.S. abuse of the so-called export control measures and U.S. interference in normal trade activities of enterprises, Hua said. "We urge relevant U.S. lawmakers to stop suppressing Chinese enterprises, stop the relevant bill and do more to build mutual trust and cooperation between China and the United States."
