attacked China.

China is now a rich country but without a military to match. It is still weak against an alliance of G8 / NATO.

So in a worst case scenerio if trade war do eventually evolved into a real war as Trump continue to provoke China by doing more and more outrageous provocations - one way or another China may be provoke into war. Because that's the only real trump card that Trump has.

Remember China now has nuclear weapons. Are the US or any other country going to sacrifice their major cities and millions of their citizens for the sake of Taiwan ? And in a war that the US has provoked. Most likely not.

But you are correct that the US can't win a economic war against China and Taiwan and the South China Sea might be cards they can play. But I don't no if they will go as far as recognizing Taiwan as a country. That's the ONLY thing that will start a war. Most likely not, once more the nukes. If the US didn't attack Russia or North Korea out of fear of nukes than they most likely won't start a war against China over the same reason.

And Taiwan will be a big loser in a trade war between the US and China.

China should go all the way because that's what Trump will do regardless if he destroys the US. Yes I know some people here think that's too harsh. It won't be just Trump after he leaves office if Beijing thinks it'll return to normal afterwards. American politicians will go with what works to get elected. Every President after Trump will do the same thing unless they suffer the consequences. Americans have to find out the sting of the consequences in order for them to think twice.

That's the correct way to deal with any adversary. Making them suffer unacceptable loss they will learn to respect you.

: 240 years ago, near H'Atoria, a Vulcan ship crossed into Klingon space. The Klingons attacked immediately. They destroyed the vessel. Vulcans don't make the same mistake twice. From then on, until formal relations were established, whenever the Vulcans crossed paths with Klingons, the Vulcans fired first. They said "hello" in a language the Klingons understood. Violence brought respect. Respect brought peace. Captain, we have to give the Klingons a Vulcan "hello".

It is a reason Russia is respected while China is not. Trump ADMIRES Putin.
Russia has the mean and the willingness to completely annihilate USA and all of its western alliances and then some....... if pressed.

While China does not and cannot.

I think the Chinese government has no balls.

IT IS ALREADY FOLDING. ALL BARKS NO BITE.

It promise $50 billion tariff, but IT IS NOT ENACTING/ENFORCING IT.

Trump then threatens with $200 billion tariff and Chinese MOC's reponse is "Poor me poor me they are blackmailing me?"

Trump only understands one language, and that is real threat should be back by action. When Trump enacted $50 billion tariff China should have immediately put into effect $100 billion tariff to show Trump China means business if you hurt me I will hurt you twice as much. By having this weak response it only confirms to Trump he will get away with it and he will keep disrespecting China.

You guys watch. It will get worse. A LOT WORSE.

The main reason why China dominates the manufacturing industry isn't only cheaper labour (i'm sure there are places with even cheaper labour now). Rather it is the developed transport infrastructure, the willingness to do heaps of overtime without higher rates (call it what you will but it's one of the things that brought China out of poverty in the first place), on time production, meeting quality expectations, deadlines, delivery and receiving of goods etc etc. No country can match with cost in consideration. So businesses can either go broke, consumers can buy less or spend more (if they have more), or they can try setting up American manufacturing elsewhere which will take years if not longer and then may end up being horrible. If they honestly think made in China is bad, let them go to India and try get the same end product for this money. So few exist because nature > propaganda. These trade ecosystems exist the way they do for a reason, it is Darwinian evolution in motion. China dominates manufacturing because they offer the best overall deal.

LOL, I think that's what the Japanese was thinking back in late 80s when Americans started to move factories to China. "let them go to China and try get the same end product for this quality and money!" The thing is, consumer can accept inferior product no matter what. As product gets more expensive and you get less in return and quality goes down, MAJORITY OF PEOPLE STILL ACCEPT IT AND BUY THEM. :D

I have live long enough to see this happened multiple cycles.

Just look at McDonald. One of the world's biggest corporation serving up garbage and even now they are making the Big Mac smaller and smaller (its smaller than 2 hambergers now) while jacking up the price higher and higher. What does the consumer do? Accept it and buy more!

If that 200BUSD does get in the game, China must find new ways to retaliate instead of only on tariff because China only imported 130 billion USD of goods from US in 2017. There is not so much US imports left to be targeted.

I think China has few other options in other areas that are not counted in trade figures.
  • restrict Chinese tourists to US. (did it to SK).
  • restrict Chinese students going to US schools. (a very big US money earning, or Chinese buying, but not counted). This is not to limit access to real good schools like MIT, but 2nd or 3rd tier schools.
  • reduce holding of treasure papers.
  • targeting US finance sectors operation in China.
  • reduce rare earth export to US, same as US ban American supplies to ZTE.

Gawd you have no balls to be a government official.

Let me change that up for you.
  • Ban Chinese tourists to US.
  • Ban Chinese students going to US schools. (a very big US money earning, or Chinese buying, but not counted). This includes ALL schools like MIT, Caltech, Harvard...etc etc...PLUS 2nd to 10th tier schools like Trump University.
  • Reduce holding of treasury bond. Stop buying US treasury bond.
  • Target ALL US companies operating in China.
  • Ban rare earth export to US.
  • Confiscate/frozen financial assets of Chinese citizens who invest in US. Including individuals who buys real estate (now this is the REAL big money earner for US. Not that pansy University fee.... LOL).

That would be really nice but I don't think it will be that easy. Maybe if Trump becomes a perpetual US president then it would be much easier to envision what you wrote but as things stand, those countries all just look towards the light at the end of the tunnel, hoping it's 2020 but accepting that it may be 2024 before America gets a sane president................

I think you HUGELY over-estimated people's intelligence to elect a sane leader. The history is full of examples.
Hitler for one. German people elected him into office.

Berlusconi another one. He is actually a perfect template for Trump. Both are tycoons, both cannot help themselves to be at the centre of controversy everyday. And the Italians can't help themselves but keep electing him into office making him the LONGEST SERVING Italian Prime minister for 9 YEARS until he almost bankrupt Italy.

George W Bush. Enough said.

You're 20 years out of date.

China today is militarily strong enough to repel a combined NATO attack. It might still not have the force projection capabilities of NATO, but it is more than strong enough to defend itself.

Where is you get this nonsense China tariff will take effect the same day US tariff implemented. It is as clear as that It is even mimic the 2 stages of US tariff

I don't think it is necessary to play who get the larger %^$L Enough to say there will be retaliatory action taken commensurate with US tariff
